What finish for an oak lathe bench?

A decent kitchen work top water proof oil. There are many about. Then sealed with a rattle can of lacquer

the lathes look great with a nice clean top on the bench but with cutting oils and oil id rather use a tray to collect it

I went to my local timber merchant today and they didn't have the polyx oil in small tins so after a chat with the guy I got some Osmo TopOil. He said a few coats of that will give a good protection and the 500ml tin will allow for loads of re-applications since it's a work surface.

Not a good idea to put your lathe straight onto oak it's got a hight tannic acid content which is why you allways use brass fixings,it will corrode the underside of your lathe in contact with the oak,if I were doing it I would use some plastic dpc between the lathe & the oak.

Does this to your hands too

It was persistenting it down while it went through the thicknesser though..
