I'm part-way through renovating a 100yr old Cataract lathe and I have a beautiful 2" thick oak bench top to mount it on, courtesy of a very nice member called Ton-up.
I know nothing about finishing wood so I'm looking for advice. I want to finish this top with something that will:
Show the wood (no paint etc)
Resist cutting & spindle oil
Not allow oil/swarf/muck off the lathe/dirty fingerprints to stain the timber permanently.
Easy to apply and maintain
I've got some bog standard ordinary clear varnish but is it suitable or is there some product like a wax or something that will be just as/more durable.
Ideas please
