hi

does anyone know about wells as in bore hole or water well ?
l am suffering from a lack of water for my pond ( bordering on lake ) l dug last year, given that l havent seen rain for maybe 6 weeks its no suprise that the pond is more than a little low, at the moment l can almost walk on water its so shallow, there is no mains water on site so its either rain water or dig a deep hole and suck it out so is there anyone on here who does this for a living or has any experiance of it ? how is it done ? do you have to line the walls with tube, what sort of diameter is best etc etc
my neighbour who has no mains water either has relied on a well for water for 80 years its has never run dry or done him any harm drinking it, he tells me the well is only 20 feet deep but my land is probally 20 feet higher than his so we are probally talking maybe 50 feet down,
anyone got a 50' drill bit l can put in my battery drill ??
any ideas chaps ???

Get somebody to dowse it first, or even try yourself.
Slightly off topic, dowsing a weird business but it works.
I have no idea how you build a well but will follow this thread with interest.
ie do you start laying the bricks from the bottom of the hole, or from the top?

Never thought of that before but now can't stop thinking bout it!

if your going to dig by hand use concrete rings its called casoning place a ring on top of earth then start digging out .once dug below the ring it will fall further down the hole then place another ring on top just keep adding rings the further u dig its own weight will push them down the further u dig

50' is not much for the borehole fellas, they used to work on our site and was amazing seeing how much they can go down in a day if the grounds ok, no idea of cost though and then of course there is the price of the sleeves they insert to avoid collapse on soft earth areas.

Dowsing is weird - I tried it with a bent coat-hanger and definitely got some indications, unfortunately my parents wouldn't let me dig the lawn up to verify the accuracy of the indications!

Fred Dibnah lined a mineshaft with bricks from the top down, I can't remember the exact method but I thing he drove pegs into the side of the shaft to support some timberwork a few courses from the top, built the courses and after the mortar had set moved the staging down and built more courses upto the first lot. I think he left the pegs in place to support the bricks when the staging was moved down. Something like that anyway.

ive seen a few been built on farms and 300ft bore holes witha 4inch borehole pump . if your lining with bricks u start with a large round ring or collar and start building the bricks on top of it the same method is used as in the concrete rings dig underneath the ring and the bricks drop down . just keep building the bricks on top as u go deeper

not much chance of me digging by hand lol, and concrete rings sound expensive beside if the wall are lined with concrete how does the water get in ? l assumed it soaks in from the sides ? would you not also need scuba gear on if you were digging by hand ? dosent sound a nice job, wheres the yts lad

Can you please let us know when you plan to dig the bore hole, Because i'm sure it will rain and rain and rain once you have a water supply secured, then you're gonna have too much water!!!!

Or don't dig the bore hole and we'll have the driest summer on record,

My vote is to make the pond into a sand pit

if it is lined with bricks u dont need to cement them in just lay them in dry end to end its in a circle so the sides cant cave in as any pressure is equal all the way round simlar to an arch

Buy a tanker....fill it with water........fill aforementioned pond

sounds a lot easier to me

You will have to have a licence to extract water from the local water authority and maybe some input from the plocal planning people.

Hire a Well Boring company to bung a 90 ( or whatever ) foot well about 300 mm in diameter , they will fit a porous liner in the hole and cap /line the top ten feet of so .

Then all you'll need is the slim submersible pump capable of the lift of water or a primed pumping again capable of the lift .

Ten years ago when I looked at having a bore hole of only 30 feet the price was a tad under £1500 inc the primed pump ...I found the company on-line and also found several in the yellow pages

Well thats sounds like what l imagine an old well to be like,
however l am unsure to the sequence of the digging/biulding, l would assume you would have to build the wall up from the bottom since the bricks are only stacked on top of each other, this would mean that the digging must be finished to the full depth hence leaving plenty of time for the walls to cave in and fill with water while we are off looking for a bricky stupid enough to be lowered down the well while we toss bricks down to him

priciple sounds sound enough just dont know how to go about it

Posts #9 & #10 describe different ways of using bricks, building down from the top.

I suspect the bricks have to be wedge shaped, you could push a rectangular brick out of the wall without disturbing the bricks round it.

well the tanker idea seems to hold water however l think l would still need to dig a well to get the water to put in the tanker to tip back out into the pond
unless you ment drive the tanker off site to some where with a hose pipe and fill it, which would mean l would need an artic to pull a full sized tanker ( petrol tanker size)
at a guess l would need hundreds of tankers to fill the pond up, not to sure about the economics of that one would be much much cheaper to have a drilling company in an have it all done for me,

bit of an old wives tale that one about the license and fee required, l asked the council who refered me to the enviroment agency who refered to the water act of 2003
which says you can suck out of your own bore hole 20 tons of water a day every day, more than enough for me

found a price of £40 a meter on the net ( no liner ) but clearly they arnt going to come out and drill 5 meters for £200 there must be set up charges etc as well
