I suspect the bricks have to be wedge shaped, you could push a rectangular brick out of the wall without disturbing the bricks round it.

sounds all too compicated for me, l like the idea of drilling a smallish bore 4 or 5" maybe, l see some people hammer a steel tube into the ground pull it back out remove the earth from the inside and repeat

bit of an old wives tale that one about the license and fee required, l asked the council who refered me to the enviroment agency who refered to the water act of 2003
which says you can suck out of your own bore hole 20 tons of water a day every day, more than enough for me

found a price of £40 a meter on the net ( no liner ) but clearly they arnt going to come out and drill 5 meters for £200 there must be set up charges etc as well

That's good news ....I was doing our borehole idea in 1995 and also had to consider waste water. The paper work was immense , planners were also involved ..

You will need the bore hole a lot deeper than the water table for as you pump you will exhaust it if there is not suffficient volume of water in the borehole . It will slowly seep ( unless you hit a decent water course in sandstone etc. ) back in the hole through the sides of the liner membrane to replace what you are pumping out hence the need for a greater acessible volume to pump .

well the tanker idea seems to hold water however l think l would still need to dig a well to get the water to put in the tanker to tip back out into the pond
unless you ment drive the tanker off site to some where with a hose pipe and fill it, which would mean l would need an artic to pull a full sized tanker ( petrol tanker size)
at a guess l would need hundreds of tankers to fill the pond up, not to sure about the economics of that one would be much much cheaper to have a drilling company in an have it all done for me,

The hole and lining materials cost about £6k and that was in very easily drilled sandstone.......if they hit running sand the costs could fly up.

even though the hole is 60m deep the pump is actually only 30m down- this was to allow for a drop in the water table in the future. The pump plus pressurization system for the farm added another £5k to the job so boreholes are not cheap!!

no liner the whole site is clay, heres a pic from when l was digging it, and yes l got carried away working on the excavator is very theraputic

thats what l wanted hard numbers, l can discount the pump and control gear as there is no electric either so l will just drop the end of a diesel engined pump's suction hose down the well. or even biuld a wind powered pump ?

l guess what l need to know is how far down the water is, the farmer in the next field is telling me that if he digs down 4' he hits water, my field is maybe 15' higher so its not that far underground really, was pondering digging down with excavator which will reach down 18' to see whats down there ??

The water table can " flow " and thus two sites in close proximity can show a massive difference to what one would normally expect to be true.

Dig that hole with your machine , see what comes up .
Watch out for the clay /soil to liquify as you get deeper as the water flows /seeps through the clay /silt making it live and thixotropic.
My test hole was only 14 feet deep x 9 foot x 9 foot . I jumped down to the bottom off the bucket to see how hard it was when suddenly the botttom of the hole started to go liquid and the bottom of the side walls of the trench started to flow inwards... Thankfully Bob was on the digger , realized my predicament & used the bucket to rescue me.

It made me realize how stupid I'd been to descend into an un supported / un shuttered trench /hole .

there's an auto grass club near me and a farmer wanted a fishing pond and they wanted the clay so a deal was struck and a few folding notes passed to a firm that is building a bypass near by for the lads and the machines for the weekend . there digging happily away filling a few 40ton dumpers as they go and after 36hours of solid digging they decide to go for breakfast leaving the digger in the hole. when they came back the digger was up to the cab in mud/ water so a hasty retreat was needed!

no no not for fishing l am not a fisherman in fact l would see sitting still still for hours doing nothing as a waste of valuable time but l would sit happily on one of my excavators for hours and not see that as a waste of time good job we are all different other wise you would never get a peg at a fishing pond without booking years in advance

well the pond has several reasons for being created, not the least of which is l like excavators, when l was a boy l wanted to be digger driver but never quite made it in fact l have nothing to do with the construction trade but that hasent stopped me ending up with 4 excavators , so if you have an excavator as a toy you need to be able to use it, digging a hole and filling it in and then digging another and filling it in soon gets boring so l needed something meaningful to do with my excavator, an offroad or quad bike track was one of my first thoughts and being a law abiding citizen l wated to do it right and get planning permission, BIG mistake dont every tell the councill what you want to do as they will say NO whatever it is you want and once they have said NO you are stuck, better not to ask if ask me
anyway as you might imagine the council were less than enthusatic if fact l though they were going to shoot me and chop me up into little bits there and then, a defininate NO go away we wont even consider you application
so that was that some time later l got to thinking about digging a pond as l like wildlife and such, would be a good way of getting some digger time but again you need the councils permission to do anything, you might be suprised at the amount of power the council has ( or thinks it has ) l have a 25 acre field and can do jack s**t in it with out planning permission, l had a year long battle to get pp for a wooden stable block in a position that no one could see unless they were trespassing, you can biuld a stable block in your own garden any size, mutiple floors as big as you like with out telling the council but not in a bloody big field something wrong there but hey hoe have to play by their rules l supose, anyway off to the council ask what l need in the way of pp for a pond, everthing it would seem it you cant just go round digging holes in your own field, illegal apparently, they wouldent accept an application for a pond untill l had a baseline ecological survey done so l had to pay some one with lots of letters after their name to come out and look at my grass and tell me it was err grass £600 for 10 minutes work
but with out it its a non starter along with other fees it was about £1000 to be allowed to dig a hole on my own land, but we got there in the end a few stipulations were attached to the planning permission but hey hoe l got the planning in the end, one of the stipulations was that none of the 2000 tons plus of spoil was to leave the site to protect the lanes nearby, when l asked what l was suposed to to do with 2000 tons of clay l was told by letter to mound it up round the pond and it would soon grass over l have that letter framed on the wall, why ??
to me its a letter telling me to constuct a quad bike track under another name
anyway l enjoyed biulding the err pond and sit by the side of it watching the kingfishers when ever l get the chance
so as well as giving me something to do with the excavator
it also gives us some where to play with the buggys and stuff

It is not a quad bike track , it is a circumferential pond maintenance access route used for checking and to maintain the ecological status of the site .

Though if you ever get some nerd on a narrow leather saddled push bike wearing leather shorts visiting you in the middle of winter just dig a big hole for them with your biggest digger , for like as not they will be trying to get your pond made a Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSI ) due to them finding a lesser spotted bug wart in the pond ..then your scuppered ...no access or interference with the natural ecological situation ..no quad bike noise or exhaust fumes.

I was spitting feathers when I found out who the lanky hairless four eyed specimen was walking around my farm ... told him to get away PDQ else he'd be in the middle of a breach of the peace.

He had a satellite photo of my farm and the new slurry tank lagoon , he was trying to see what new things he could find .
Thankfully the dog took a liking to the unique sand lizards that had arrived in the crushed concrete I'd used for the bases and road ways , she ate no end of them.

we have 4 SSI's at work and 12 rare orchids so nature watch are frequently crawling through our ditches. fortunately we have 5000 aches+ of land the ssi people are a pain for making up regulations and when questiones soon change therre tune but try it on all the time about ditch clearing etc

last time i went "Off roading" i ended up needing the capstan winch that we took to pull the cable with to get it out! why do they insist on putting road tyres on a 110? slightest bit of damp grass and it looses grip mind you i did have it up to the chassis that time

do you know l sometimes have this nightmare that after spending 10 years biulding my little nature reserve, planting 4000 native trees at my expense one day some beared sandle wearing ex hippies turn up and turf me off my own land as l have great crested newts and other rare species
what a nightmare

think l need to train the dogs to eat anything that moves or looks like a rare plant
