I know someone with a borehole which was fine until they started making and selling jam. The water then had to meet certain standards and the ordinary UV filter etc wasnt enough. The local water people found high concentrations of some elements so they had to install loads of other equipment to make it meet the standards.

Traffic lighted junctions flow more traffic than roundabouts when traffic is heavy. As our roads become ever more busy, more human operated junctions will be replaced by traffic lights.

I was coinidentally speaking with my auntie over the weekend and she was telling me about (my mums side of the family) growing up with water supplied from a well, and as romantic as it all sounds they had a younger sibling who died when she was a couple of years old from drinking water that had been contaminated with cattle faeces. I wouldn’t be taking any chances...

I was brought up on spring water, no filters, though there was a settlement tank, which my father and his neighbours had to climb into and clean out every 6 months. A strange red “canker” he called it was pulled up in buckets on the end of a rope. The water passed the quality tests required for dairy farms at the time. I now work about ¼ mile from there, this water is from a borehole, and the supply stopped on Saturday. The landlord back flushed the pipe as there was plenty of water at the top of the borehole, and burst the pipe. However a dead mouse was found floating in the supply afterwards so they think they have found the cause of the blockage. No UV filters in this supply either, perhaps there should be.

I often used to pop out for a spin down the M4 and do a quick u turn around a roundabout at a junction - takes 10 mins now due to the multiple sets of lights - and they cause far more accidents - but now back on topic!

If YES then you can probably get a grant for it from the local authority (well you can here in Scotland)
now a water test will what you need but at a guess it will be
Starting in the well working to the tap
A foot valve to stop back flow
Some pipe
A self priming pump eg a DAB 105M which will supply 4ish bar
A 5 to 10 micron filter to remove the lumps
A PH neutraliser so that the copper pipes don't rot away in silly quick time
A UV steriliser which will need a new bulb once a years (that said ours is 3 years old and I'm not dead)
A expansion vessel of about 20ltrs or so which stops the pumps from starting too often
Now this is all outside in a wee wooden shed to keep it protected from the weather

@thinfourth its not the only supply, they just like the idea of using the well
I’m confident with the break tank and pumps for the W/C and washing machine supplies, just the drinking water treatment. They are getting it tested so we can proceed from that with what specific treatment is needed, however today she rightly pointed out we drank from untreated wells for a long time

Our well is sited about 3 yards from where the cess pit used to be. Original very old well as bits of the house are 1650. Well was still in use in the 1960's as was the cess pit 
Well now only used for watering the garden, cess pit retired and remote Klargester installed.

That well is a great feature especially as it's in the house. We have some friend who have exactly the same and covered it over.
One thing worth noting is our well water has a lot more minerals than the mains water and we used to get quite a bit of limescale when using the well full time.
Another good thing is hose pipe bans don't affect you if you can show the hose is supplied from the well but be aware it's pretty easy to run one dry if pumping large volumes of water.

Reminds me of the pub in Bromham where there is a well in one of the rooms, its covered over with a glass panel, there is a light in the well so you can see down.

My father's place in Portugal certainly is.
There are 2 massive wells dating back to Roman times. You can see the tool marks where they cut through the solid rock.
The wells are about 20 feet diameter and 80 feet deep. There are stairs going down a tunnel for each well. They used to lead a donkey down a ramp and draw the water from a platform half way down to load into panniers.
When my brother stayed there he drank water from the taps all the time. He didn't realise only 1 tap was filtered. There are giant toads in each well. Yuk!

Well I wouldn't use the term exciting, purely interesting. In the same way that members on here find a variety of topics interesting such as the building of sheds. The diversity of interest here adds to the strength and depth of the forum.
