Some interesting stuff for reading later. But from the first pages I get the burning of pallets would be good - truth is though pallets are not easy to move around, let alone load into a woodburner. Even a big wide opening front door wouldn't be much use. So you're stuck with breaking up a clumsy nail ridden fuel, hardly ideal.
I like the idea of burning wood and whatever else is available - we burn oil, compared to when we had a coal burner its easy, cheap and clean. When the weather is cold we burn wood in the woodburner - this keeps you warm twice...

With pallets, you dont need a good finish, so i just run the chainsaw through the NON NAILY part (i stuck that in capitals as someone will drift off to talking about nails and chains otherwise ). Its messy but quick and I just do it on rough ground so the saw dust doesnt need sweeping.

they couldnt afford coal as was expensive so furniture was used and anything was burnt in the wood fire including the furniture you was sat upon where you ended up sat on the floor or sat on fruit boxes

Almost certainly with one of these, followed by an auger feed...

But, alas, i suspect it would be cheaper just to use the electricity direct!

if the truth is known you dont need long pallets infact your better off having half pallets and stacking the cut offs on top of one and another

Why smash the block out? That goes on the fire as well....

yeah they get thrown in but better if you can pack them all together dosnt mean it happens most just throw them in willy nilly into the fire

you light at one side and it has to burn along its length to the end

people want lazyness and get on with something else its not always a good thing when a little bit of work produces better results and less wood usage

yet they sit there and moan about the wood usage and there cutting up of the wood

I don't care about maximum efficiency. There's the confusion.

For me, the wood is free - if i can sling a bunch of whole pallets in the back of the landrover, and then unload them to a "device" that then turns them into hot water for the house, then i don't care if it works at 1/2 the efficiency, 1/3 the efficiency, 1/5 the efficiency of making dominos out of them, and tessellating them neatly into every corner of the stove. I really dont care.

I have a logistics firm a stones throw away giving me pallets on a weekly collection deal, free of charge. I just want to spend as little time as possible with them and have a warm house.

i agree more than you know, as i like to be warm and also have plenty of hot water available

but many dont have the space to store wood never mind collect the wood

the rocket stove appealed to me for this very reason as i can use the second year store whilst the first year is drying

im also not chewing through 4 cords of wood per winter instead im burning just 1 cord of wood ( less collection less storage )

4ft.x4ft.x8ft.is a loggers cord

as i have 4x times that above in wood storage all in softwood ( pallets / building material like 3x2s and 12x4 beams )

im also not using electric via the boiler just via cutting the wood into smaller lengths ( half pallet ) electric is handy for pumping the hot water back to the house or an auto lighting stove after loading earlier in the day im fine with that usage

just not something that needs a fan blower to get it to temp faster

you would be far better off building a half pallet stove burner

that you can easily load then stack the offcuts inbetween the loaded pallet within the burner

have the exit in the middle to another chamber and heat up there

Gaz, there are a very small number here who, for whatever reason, make posts with aggressive intention.

I've never, for one moment, had you in that class. I honestly believe you have best intentions in mind.

But... ; )

There are times when, for whatever reason, someone may want to do things differently from how you think they should be done.

At those times sometimes you can seem somewhat inflexible. Which is fine, as you think you know the best solution.

But, sometimes someone else may think differently, and it may also be wise, in those circumstances, to somewhat smooth your response?

I think oil fired agas are about 325c on the hot hot plate, when the temperature is at the black line (mid point) on the front thermometer.

Thats not *that* hot.

(not that its clever at all, but we have had the hotplate on ours emitting light well into the visible spectrum before)


Ive not seen an esse in parts, and ive not found diagrams that make it clear, but, as i recall, the exhaust is routed round the back somewhere where the boiler is. I think they may even have a mechanical flap on the routing, so you can swap between full heat to boiler or to ovens.

I may be talking complete rubbish, as i didnt look at it that close, due to the significant cost difference.


Rayburns were really meant for coal, in a time when coal was cheap.

Our Rayburn worked far better on pallet blocks than coal.
Loved it but needed stoking quite a lot. Used to get incredibly hot. 600C was the hottest we had. Now we have an oil fired AGA. Far more sensible and a lot less work. Don't use it in summer obviously. But still it is used at least 9 months of the year.
During summer we have an induction single hotplate and a big Sharp combi mircrowave/oven.

wether you like my comment or not the attitude of the above is just as bad as those banking there stoves down for overnight burning or during the day spewing dirty black smoke up there chimneys

I know the top of the flue has to be so much above the ridge to stop fumes going in the house but it’s not 3m! I’ll dig it out as I looked into all this for my wood burner here.

an old stove reference or badly controled stove the rule of thumb should be check your chimney but many cant be bothered does it really take a fine to make you do what you should have done in the first place

you have to remember bans are coming in not only on wood stoves but also on wood boilers its better to be more efficent and smokeless

its certainly not worth the 1000.00 fine for a badly burning not effiecent wood stove or boiler and all it takes is one stupid complaint

Out of curiosity, how does that not just all go woosh? There is so much air between them i would think that will be an inferno for ten mins and then nothing left.

That doesn't matter if the heat reclamation is good.

And, even if it's not perfect, it's still a disposal pathway.
