The (rubbish) photos on his website show, what looks like, a riddling wheel in the bottom of the firebox.

But, really, I dont know. Always seems odd that he doesn't get the new doors enameled.

Agree 100%. It would look a thousand times more in keeping. And maybe dont use a lid handle...? The proper handles can be bought from rayburn.

He's probably like the rest of us, coming up with good ideas and working with what he's got. Enamelling is a costly business beyond the scope of your average bloke in a small workshop. Having said that, I'd at least try to find some stove paint to match the colour and try and make some fittings that look in keeping, doesn't need to be an exact match but people appreciate the effort and there's nothing wrong with putting your own little touches into it. Just my two cents worth anyway!

He offers a re-enameling service, but specifically refuses to colour the new doors. There may be some sort of technical reason. But he also (from what I've read over a number of years) seems quite, umm, inflexible in some respects.

Ok, that's, um, odd? Maybe he doesn't want to stock different colours? Still sounds odd though if he has the capacity to do enamelling. I suppose it's quite a niche market so he's not worried about competition. I would just want it to look right if I was doing it but I guess he has his reasons, whatever they are!

I wondered that as I typed my last comment. You could be right. If you had a black Rayburn his could fit but not so keen on the red (which mine is too!)

Rayburn Royal Boiler Specification

Mild Steel Construction Output approx 12,000 BTU
you can see it was placed at the rear of the firebox

with a wrap around within the firebox it changes the output stage 2



however one drawback to this is your robbing the firebox of heat

this is where the new style downdraft outbeats the old style as the primary air is heated and so is the scondary air is heated

giving a much cleaner burn and also being smokeless to a degree however it still chugs up the chimney right at the start until its heated enough

the farm 2000 follows a bad style of heating cold primary and a partial warm secondary



downdraft uses 1500f within the primary chamnber and the secondary air chamber is hitting 2000f

the water is better heated within the scondary chamber as its alot hotter in that chamber more hotter than firebox of a normal wood stove and also hotter than the rayburns and esse kitchen stoves

now rocket stoves beat this even more by using less wood and get to temp much quicker by just using 1 log instead of 5 log splits like the xeoos twinfire

Dunsley Yorkshire also has the boiler in the secondary chamber. It stops the boiler from cooling the fire in the primary chamber resulting in a much cleaner burn. I make relatively simple burners but if I'm asked to add a boiler I always put it above the fire for the same reason. The normal placement in the firebox is dreadful.

But if you were above the fire with the boiler in a rayburn wouldnt you significantly reduce cooking ability? Or is it all about how the exhaust is routed?

Not necessarily. The boiler is only about three inches thick, so if it's against the back of the firebox at the top it won't really reduce the heat to the hotplate very much at all.

I think oil fired agas are about 325c on the hot hot plate, when the temperature is at the black line (mid point) on the front thermometer.

Thats not *that* hot.

(not that its clever at all, but we have had the hotplate on ours emitting light well into the visible spectrum before)


Ive not seen an esse in parts, and ive not found diagrams that make it clear, but, as i recall, the exhaust is routed round the back somewhere where the boiler is. I think they may even have a mechanical flap on the routing, so you can swap between full heat to boiler or to ovens.

I may be talking complete rubbish, as i didnt look at it that close, due to the significant cost difference.

You can get anthracite beans again as they are used in pellet boilers. Best forging fuel ever
