VW T5 Too much oil

I have a mate who has a 2.0 vw T5 tdi, the engine holds 7 litres, now don't laugh but he did an oil change but drained the gear box then added 7 litres of oil into the engine, after a quick drive it made a big cloud and started to run away with itsself but he managed to stop it on the key, after draining the excess oil the van starts and runs but after it going for a minute is lets out white smoke, i think it will still have oil in the intake and intercooler, not much you can all do but i thought you might like a giggle. i have told him to clean out what he can and take it for a small drive.

White smoke suggests water in the cylinders. Keep an eye on coolant level as the additional oil could have caused damage to cylinder head or gasket by hydraulic pressure

He did fill the GB after.
Some of them take more than 7 ltrs.
The extra 7 would not be good

Gearbox is now refilled, mad part is no warning lights came on and the only thing that came up on vag com was the maf.. i think he has been very lucly

I'm sure it'll be fine, just need to clear the oil out of the air intake/intercooler and exhaust

the fact that it stopped on the key means it wasn't really running away... probably just a bit of oil into the intake through the engine breather pipe?

I serviced my 19 plate passat myself this year…
While looking after grandson coz ‘er-indoors‘ went to work….I drained the engine oil…boy came outside to see what was going on, I left the drain pan to catch the dregs…

Got new oil and a jug, proceeded to fill engine with 4.7 litres…Replaced oil filler cap on engine.
Went to start car, waiting for Oil warning lamp to go out..,,next thing I see…’ Low oil level check handbook’ in big red letters on dash.. stopped engine pronto…
Tried again, same message…scratched head, looked under car….drain pan full of new engine oil!!
Anyway, refitted drain plug, poured in more oil tried again, no abnormal noise…
phew! Luck escape I’d say..

I know a chap who worked at a few main dealers and while at a Renualt dealers someone filled up a diesel without draining it, apparently it was pretty scary, guy had it in top gear, foot brake and hand brake to try and stop it

I remember reading a comment in Practical Classics..... "Show me someone who has never filled an engine before refitting the drain plug and I'll show you someone has never done an oil change"

I once drained a fuel tank that was reading empty...armed with a tiny container I proceeded with confidence.

Turned out the fuel gauge was busted...got a lot of petrol up my arm that day!

I've never managed it, my brother did my parents Morris, yep, forgot to put the drain plug back in.

Surely once you've drained the oil, the sump plug goes straight back in ?

I use an oil vacuum now, can't remember the last time I removed a sump plug, years ago.
