VW T5 Too much oil

One oil change I took filter off and screwed new one one. Drain plug in, new oil in. Fire her up - oil everywhere

First thought it was a faulty filter, but no. The seal from the old filter was still ‘half’ on. The new filter hadn’t sealed.

Always check old seal is still attached to old filter now. In mitigation, you can’t actually see the filter it all changed by blind feel at a stupid contortionist angle. Good design NOT.

Thanks, that makes me feel better. I’ve changed my own oil for 40 or so years and this was a first for me.

On a completely different subject - been reading a report about DPF regen - passive regeneration. Looks like most high spec cars will not go into regen without having a certain level of diesel in the fuel tank. Those drving about on empty most of the while may even be stopping the DPF going into regen.

When forcing a regen in the workshop - most scan tools ask for a fuel level above a quarter of tank full and coolant temp above 90 degrees C.

Honda diesels have always been like that.
We had a company Accord that the driver rarely drove any more than the 6 miles from his house to the office, and rarely filled up.
I'm sure you can guess how many visits it had to us for forced regens...

Checking the seal came off with the filter, was drummed into me as an apprentice, and is something I still always check.
But then I did get to witness the aftermath of a mechanic who never removed the second seal on an old Iveco Daily. Only time I never had to get somebody to stand on the brakes undoing the old big crankshaft bolt, as the engine was that tight, but it still started on the key though!

NO...

I have on several instances left oil fitler seals on the block and screwed a new oil fitler and another seal onto the old oil filter seal - this makes a mess.

I have overfilled a few things in my time - due to data being wrong I am reading off a PC or out of book (or I picked the wrong engine code) - but I have never "double charged the sump contents".

The normal "garage trick" is - leaving the oil filler cap off and this makes a mess too....

Not a CRV by any chance? Awful design. Oil filter is easy nothing like an Avensis I had once, you could barely see the oil filter let alone get a filter removal tool on it.

Diesel avensis is not that bad for access on a ramp - it is how "murder tight" the filter housings are. You must have the right "slotted" cup to attack the plastic housing on these or you will get breakages

Had an E46 2.0d, yes good position of filter. Shame the Turbo blew and after fixing that (£’s) the ECU died. The car had only done 70k. End of relationship with beemers.

I don't like a BMW either. Workshop is full of them - broken BMW's and broken LandRover products.

And this is the problem when they "run away" - autos you can't stall - intake manifold throttle bodies (default setting open) - egr valves (default setting open).

Unless you wanna - rip airbox off and ram a rag down the intake - only real way now is a CO2 fire extinguisher - starve it of oxygen - to shut a run a way down.

Cold shock can be an issue - if you go for the fire extinguisher option.

As a youngster I once called the RAC out because there was an awful burning smell in the car.

Took the guy 10 seconds to diagnose the fault...plastic bag stuck to the exhaust

Reminds me of many moons ago......
Lad, not regular driver, was going out on deliveries for bit o/t. Dilligently done his vehicle checks on the old merc 308 hack, loaded up and headed off.
15min later it came across local radio....traffic warning on m8 motorway!!
There was a **** delivery van stuck on hard shoulder with plumes of smoke coming out and road was shut due to poor visibility.
He had filled the oil to under the cap.....
Obviously everyone in the depot were p*$$**g themselves.
Think he even got the eye in the sky out for a look

Chapmans garage, Norton Road, Stockton-on-Tees. Guy came in with his Morris and wanted the filter changed and "filling up with oil". But we need to do a proper oil change and take the old stuff out first!" "Oh, no need I dropped that down the drain outside my house before I came over". Can't remember whether or not it survived.
My mum, radiators go side to side, engines front to back. My dad stopped her on her fifth or sixth trip out to the driveway with a kettle to her mini!

years ago a mate worked in a garage & on the forecourt was a Porsche 911, The sales guy decided to use it to go somewhere & mate said “don’t forget to check the water” the salesman filled the sump before they let on it was air-cooled!

On the VW diesels there is a flap (changeover valve/or N239 in VW speak) that closes on shut down. It completely strangles the air supply. It is supposed to lessen the typical diesel shudder as you switch off. So that should initially stop the run away. The only thing is that opens again after a second so it could all start up again if the engine is still turning! A close shave. Assuming it is still running on all 4 cylinders it sounds like he got away with it, they do sometimes bend con rods with a bad run away.

I use an oil vacuum now, can't remember the last time I removed a sump plug, years ago.

Same here, I'd never go back. It makes oil changes a clean painless experience so there is very little excuse not to do it. I use a Mityvac MV7300, not cheap but really good. Done a mode to mine so I have a ball valve I can turn the air off with up by the handle.

I have he came mityvac, my original one was ancient, at least 15 yrs old.
