VW T5 Too much oil

I know a chap who worked at a few main dealers and while at a Renualt dealers someone filled up a diesel without draining it, apparently it was pretty scary, guy had it in top gear, foot brake and hand brake to try and stop it

Renault garage next door to us had a diesel runaway.

Burnt clutch out trying to stop it then just left it outside to die!.

Think that one was caused by turbo failure (or at least that's what they told the customer..).

I've always looked at the youtube videos if I got a job I hadn't done before. Even if you already know most of it there is always a new wrinkle someone has found. This applies particularly to unconventional engines. The T5 2.5 gear driven engine has no cam belt no alternator belt and no crank pulley. Nothing is turning externally, nothing is quite where you expect it to be and everything is awkward! Even a simple temperature sensor replacement is a 4 hour job! I've had a 2.5 for the last 19 years so I started taking pics and a description of each job I did for a forum. I did this because it's exactly what I would hope to find with a new job. I use youtube to look up how to fix white goods, vacuum cleaners and diy projects. It does pay to look at several and make you own mind up though because some are downright dangerous!

I watch stuff on utube all the time...even when I think I know how to do something it's good to have it confirmed.

The kitchen top I cut recently...watched a guy explain how the jig works...so instead of just blindly following the jig instructions I was able to work out where the jig would need to sit for myself.

People who "think" they know how to do something can be a bit of a menace (and that includes me!)

I once watched a video of a bloke in the US I think it was demonstrating how to cut out bathroom floor tiles to fit a toilet pan. He did freehand with with angle grinder with no guard, gloves or even eye protection. Actually he was obviously highly skilled and the results were quite impressive but you do have to be sure to add your own comon sense sometimes!

Some of the pupils on the 'Motor Mechanics' course used to drain the oil then start them up for a dare. I remember them laughing like drains about the noise the engines used to make.

Don't get you car serviced by the 'Motor Mechanics' pupils!

Have a gander at ‘just rolled in’ on youtube. The americans clearly don’t have a decent testing system, by the looks of some of the examples that get shown…

some states in USA don't have any tests or inspections some of the stuff over there are death traps

As long as I have been at this repairing cars thing - I look at YouTube videos. Not for a Fiesta oil change. But I bet - I look at one - once a day about something.

Door card removal is my favourite, as I can never find that bloody hidden screw!

The real question is, what caused it to come out of its hole? they should quite happily sit there even with knackered o ring jangling away to themselves.

By way of confession, I've just remembered an oil event that occurred nearly 50 years ago when I first started in the motor trade, It goes back to the early seventies. I was tasked with changing the oil and filter on a two year old Morris Minor. I was actually quite good as old school apprentices went but at seventeen my mind could wander a bit! Anyway, I started it up (studiously looking underneath to check for any oil leaks caused by a misplaced oil ring of course) No leaks, phew! About fifteen seconds in, my boss (it was a small garage) heard the strange rattling sound and came running round to switch it off! Happily with oil added and some cranking on the starter with a coil lead off it was fine, but my boss (not known for suffering fools gladly) wasn't..

I had to learn by myself from reading - pre- internet, dad not a car person (in-fact retired from self-employment due to stroke) so I learnt a lot by surviving . . .

Make sure the brake drum is back on before pressing the brake pedal . . . pistons didn't go far . . .
Make sure the shoes/pads are where they ought to be by pressing the pedal enough times ( . . . before shooting down your mums driveway and pressing the brake pedal, sailing in to the garage, door luckily open, and stopping inches from creating a new door in the back wall by yanking the handbrake . . )
Spend a week rebuilding a dizzy, carb etc as it wouldn't start . . . started on putting a gallon of fuel in . . . check the simple things!
Swapped all plugs - it even started and ran fine. A year or two later, changed them again - now with more experience, notice 3 long reach (the ones it needed) one short reach . . .
Don't weld near a car battery, even a disconnected one . . . or it will blow up, shower you in acid, as well as the back of your pride and joy . . . that car always had a tiny little dark spot in the paint afterwards, despite a thorough soaking form the hose pipe . . .
Don't jack an Alfa 75 on a sloping drive, even though you've done it a few times . . . this time you lift it just enough to make the other side rear tyre start to slide down the drive . . . got the jack down fast enough (standard trolley jack) to reduce the angle of lean so the brick wall of the house it was about to interface put three light scratches in the paint, rather than wreck the offside rear corner . . . and stopped with a few inches of scratch as the other wheel came into contact with the ground.

Comes time to drop the blocks on and halfway through for some reason it occurred to me to double check he’d torqued the mains properly. Torqued? Was the reply. Cue engine apart again to check all of his work

Not as bad. We had a new lad doing the emergency genny sets.
Hecwould drain the oil, change the oil filter and replace the crank case breather.
He would then sign the jobs off. Arrange for the waste to be disposed off
Until one day he was asked:
Why are you not ordering oil?

Turns out he failed to look on the reverse of the paper work listing the jobs to be done.

Refill with oil to manufacture specs.
Test run.
Recheck oil levels and check for leaks.
Rectify as required.

The 'butterfly' thing on the T5 intake sounds a bit like the ASO's (Air Shut Off), or 'Chalwyn' Valves fitted to some Genset engines (or any engine in a Zoned area of a Refinery, Chemical Plant or similar where explosive gasses could be leaked into the atmosphere and cause engine runaways).

The ASO's though (for safety, natch) had to be manually reset after being triggered (either by an event or by say testing the Emergency Stop buttons). I've been out to a couple of calls for the latter, when site staff have stopped an engine by the E-Stop, then not been able to get it re-started

Just to add to the guys problem he did another oil change today and this came out of the sump, hard plastic and metal bits .. oil level sensor fell apart ?

That looks more like bits of the plastic sump baffle. They can break up. The oil pump pickup sieve needs checking because smaller bits can get stuck in that and cause oil pressure problems. I have even heard tales of bits being dragged part way up the bores in extreme cases but I don't know if this is true. It must have the sump off for inspection now otherwise serious engine damage could occur.
