I will admit to liking the look of the old Kubelwagen, Hitler's version of the Jeep. I wouldn't want to own one though.
They are copies made by JBW with genuine porsche centre caps added.Love that color! wheels are really nice too...What porsche did they come off of?
JP
I realise they have a cult following, but in my experience, the reliability and economy were an absolute myth, and they were total rotboxes!
The old stuff just appeals to me more than a new high powered motor and even though the bits are expensive there are plenty of bits about and so many variations of power plants, The big test will be getting the 56 oval window beetle on the road but that will be a long term things and for now i am just collecting parts. To be honest in my opinion you could pretty much be describing every other car from that era. I can weld now from snotting up my first few cars, and you never really knew wether the damn things would start on morning especially in winter . I love classic cars - from a distance, so i'm really glad there are people like olderisbetter keeping them on the road.

I got my first beetle as my first car in the early 80's and my dad got it for about £100 and it was a 1972 1300 twin port and went everywhere and did everything in it, It went from a 1300 to a 1600 then 1641 and had disc brakes fitted before finally getting to 1900 cc with dual ict webers, the most amazing part is i don't think i purchased and new parts as back then scrap yards had lots of cheap bits and word of mouth tended to find other bits or people into helping with tuning and setting up.look forward to that. I was amazed (last time I looked) nobody has come up with a weld in oval rear window panel. I love the look of them but could never justify owning one. The later ones (again, last time I looked) it seems possible to pick up cheapish.

Yes they rot at a fast rate but just like the moggy 1000 you can get pretty much any panel, I had mine up on the jack today and it really is solid so apart from a bad bit where the from beam bolts on i have no major issues so far.Yes, I learned to weld in the seventies doing just the same job, the problem with the Beetles is that they rot in places that are hard to get to, and hard to repair properly unless you are willing to tear the thing to pieces and turn it over, floor pans, and especially above the front suspension(?)
One ofthe 4 bolt holes has been damaged, they just look like fine 12mm threaded tubes so maybe i can drill it our and weld a new one in.Is the frame head bad or just the front beam ?
Yeah that's sound like it's possible. One ofthe 4 bolt holes has been damaged, they just look like fine 12mm threaded tubes so maybe i can drill it our and weld a new one in.
Major pain the the rear, luckily i already have the fuel tank out so it might be possible to fix with a few hours of crying.I had one snap on the top of the beam that mounts through the body I was not impressed

The cheaper it costs to fix a problem the quicker i stop cryingLet me know when the crying has stopped
