Vacuum Pump (like those on tankers)

Hi folks,

Anyone have any experience with vacuum pumps used on the likes of a slurry tanker, I'm repairing one used by a portaloo company which has seen better days, see bearing pic...

I've only ever swapped vanes before so this total strip down is more of a challenge, not mechanically, more knowledge really.

Basically it's apart, I've got the correct rebuild kit from the manufacturer. My issue is that there is some faint score / wear marks in the housing where the vanes seal / run. I'm not sure if they're really an issue, or if the new vanes will just bed into them. I'm sure even if they wear a line in the vane it'll pump better than it did with half the balls missing either end...

I did wonder if I could skim the bore but worried it would take it out of spec for the vanes etc.

It's a Battioni Pagani Mec 1600P pump, belt driven by a Honda GX200.

As always, any help much appreciated.

Brush up on your Italian and see if they have a service (workshop) manual for it.

I can see if it's something the firm i work for could do.

Out in Cyprus we had a small fleet of "Sludge Gulpers " usually referred to in polite company as The White Ladies' . I had the delight of sorting out a broken pump on a very full night soil truck . We drove it to some waste land , I donned on a fully enclosed foul weather suit plus chemically protective heavy rubber gloves in 40 oC and set about undoing everything.

The over flow tube was chock a block but not for long .

After crawling out from under the " White Lady " the lads in the workshop took great delight in chucking buckets of fairly hot water ( all water pipe ran above ground over the rocks ) over me to sweeten me up . Then I escaped to get a shower and a refreshing sauna with a cool rinse off afterwards with a bucket of ice cold water from the workshop's chiller machine .

Other lads stripped and repaired the vane core and put new SRBP fibre vanes in it . IIRC the bearing were a bog standard quality type bearing .

The vanes are fibre, no way to build them up. I don't know if the extra volume created between the rotor and the housing after boring out would make a difference to how effective it is at sucking/blowing.

Yeah bearings are just 6305s I have them, along with every seal/gasket.

Thankfully this tank is basically empty, still whiffs, even over the usual smells of a working farm where my workshop is!!

Can you run a simple hone thru the bore ?
simple hone as in brake hone, not an accurate sunnen style.

I doubt a bit of wear will have much effect when sucking the air in or pumping it out , a simple thin plate might be able to reface any seriously worn area on the faces of the bearing carriers .
I'd clean it up and see what happens , when you have a full tank of water ...... will it drag water into the witness tube to a suitable height

It mentions skimming the bore, no specs as to how much you can take off unfortunately.

Can you run a simple hone thru the bore ?
simple hone as in brake hone, not an accurate sunnen style.

To me it would make more sense to have a slightly ovalid bore so the rotor stays reasonably balanced so the bore won't be easily honed .

Ah not worked on anything like that the vacuum pumps we do have solid steel rotors with say 10 vanes. Some have vanes that can be adjusted on slotted holes and then fitters set each vane against the bore with feeler stock

How abrasive is human excrement? I guess it depends on how much sand(wiches) you eat. Could building it up with Belzona work?

With regards to skimming, measure or estimate what you would need to remove and ask the manufacturer's technical department, mentioning that you have consulted their own service material and it does not contain the information you require. Sending an email does not cost anything and the worst that will happen is they will not reply.

Id go with Belzona 1111 if its just filling scores. Skimming could be difficult and costly. My experience of such things were much smaller, or big were liquid ring a different beast. But with vane types, only rotate with vanes in the way they are designed to run.

They normally wear in the bottom of the cylinder where the rotor in closest . The wear is normally in a wave pattern which makes the blades bounce. I have had them bored out in the past but not many machine shops can bore something that big ( ours are around 12" diameter)

Yeah this is in the bottom, though the rotor is closest at the top on this... The bore is maybe 120mm and 200mm deep, open both ends obviously. Would be an interrupted cut with the 2 ports on the sides.

Yeah this is in the bottom, though the rotor is closest at the top on this... The bore is maybe 120mm and 200mm deep, open both ends obviously. Would be an interrupted cut with the 2 ports on the sides.

Yes my mistake I should have said furthest away. After boring you should set the rotor clearance by removing the end plate dowels and laying the rotor on feeler strip but I don't normally bother as they are quite a rough old pump.
