My £90 Falken fronts are near the legal limit after around 15k milles. The rears have plenty left.
The Falkens seemed ok when new but soon as it got cold and a little wear they had little grip.
Any recommendations? Size is 205/60/R16
Yes people who need tyres on the back still want them swapped to the front, even though it's not the recommended way. There are some good tyre deals to be had on ebay if you don’t mind fitting them yourself. Tyres used to get moved about on the car to promote even wear, fronts to back/corner to corner. Is this still done?

Never understood this. You then end up having to replace 4 tyres a once at twice the cost.Yes people who need tyres on the back still want them swapped to the front, even though it's not the recommended way.
What is recommended presently ?Yes people who need tyres on the back still want them swapped to the front, even though it's not the recommended way.
Odd....you would think a rear wheel drive vehicle might want them on the back.If grip is most important and money are no concern, new tyres to the front will always be best option.

Problem with that is these days lots of tyres are directional, so front to rear on same side only, or not at all the if you have different size wheels on the front and rearIn years gone by it would always be a switch to opposite ends and corners, inset front to offside rear. Normally at service time.

Had a set on my Freelander 2, got 48k out of them with about 3mm remaining.Mine are General Grabber AT3, come with 12mm tread and rated for 50K miles.
I've done 20K on them so far in 5 years and they're still on 10mm with no cracks or sign of wear.
At £120 each they were £40 more than unknown-brand road tyres which kept wearing out or picking up nails.
But they're worth it to me (Disco td5 auto, 235/70 16, standard alloys), cruise nicely at 70-ish, quiet and loads of confidence on grip.

120k from GG AT3 or are you running BFG's?50k. I got 120k out of my last set!
No this now causes instantaneous death if you don't put new tyres only on the rear. There are some good tyre deals to be had on ebay if you don’t mind fitting them yourself. Tyres used to get moved about on the car to promote even wear, fronts to back/corner to corner. Is this still done?

I still do it that way, on the directional ones, you reverse them on the rims.Problem with that is these days lots of tyres are directional, so front to rear on same side only, or not at all the if you have different size wheels on the front and rear![]()
How do you find the Cooper AT3?I fitted cooper AT3 and they are doing well, bought second hand near new ,four for the price of two .
....and off into the ditch this goes......Jeesh.My only RWD experience is motorbikes - about 100k miles on a cbr6, and a bit of spin on the rear is no problem, I'd still want the grip at the front.
I oiled my chain every day, often to excess, with lots of fling up the side of rear tyre, it was no issue with the right tyre, pilot road 4's, there was no loss of grip.
Steady Fred, this guys an expert, he drive engines till they seize.....and off into the ditch this goes......Jeesh.
off road I only do slightly muddy tracks going to clay shoots so great , on road quiet enough , possibly slightly less mpg , grip seems good my only complaint is they feel slightly harder on road , bouncier on pot holes, as in bumpier suspension wise , my thoughts are possibly side walls are stiffer ? actually thinking on sticking road tyres on front for softer ride whilst leaving at3 s on the lighter back for grip off road , as long as rolling diam is the same , but find I don t use or even need the 4x4 often , even road tyrresand 4x4 has great traction , but they were cheap at just over £200 for 4 ! with about 7/8mm tread and none edge scrubbed . I have checked pressures and dropped from 30psi to 28 , still uncomfortable on rough pot holed roads though , mght be shocks are going home ? hope this helps .How do you find the Cooper AT3?
I'm currently running Continental Cross Contact ATR which will be ready for replacement come the Autumn, considering different options including Cooper, Toyo and Kumho AT tyres.
The premium brands have just got ridiculously priced so happy to look at mid range stuff.
Talking of expensive tyres, work colleague has just bought a used Audi Q7 with 22" wheels. Priced a tyre in her size just for a giggle, 285/35/22 - £330 each![]()
