do they hardly get used, wifeys car has only done 8 thousand miles since new and there cracking at the edges but nowhere near worn

My Skoda had Maragoni Tyres on when I bought it, I understood they were a Kwik Fit special, they were truly awful, they were the only tyres I’ve been glad when they wore out, they behaved like greased rubber. Never heard of them before or since thank goodness.

I wonder if a chemical that was used to stop cracking (like some kind of UV repellent)

I think marangoni were remoulded tyres. Might explain why they were so bad lol.

Only any good if you had enough room on the rims for the required amount of balance weights.

It wobbles enough at 25mph to make my elbows move side to side.

Look for a torn cord.
I had that happen a time or two.

Michelins are famous for it. I thought maybe it was because they lasted longer than other brands so finally give up the ghost by going twisted.

I only ever bought remould tyres once. I'm normally fussy about tyres but on this occasion I had bought a 10 year old Sierra as a cheap runabout and was only spending the bare minimum to keep it running. Remoulds on the rear and it would oversteer like a drift car at the slightest provocation, wet roundabouts were hilarious.

That's funny as the only car I ever had with remoulds was a Sierra and the only reason I knew that was because I checked them when I went backwards up the wrong side of a duel carriageway coming out of a rounderbout

Just different rubber compounds.
With the push to be more efficient while maintaining grip, the mixes aren't as resistance to perishing as they used to be.
Cracking like that in the photo is fine, as it's only the tread and not the carcass of the tyre that's cracking.

dont even get half of that on mine it gets ragged round corners at 70 mph on motor ways of course COUGH COUGH

I don't do budget tyres after I learned my lesson. I used to do a lot of motorway work. In an emergency stop situation good tyres will stop you a few metres quicker. Is it REALLY worth saving £100 a set, compared with the hassle, loss of time, loss of NCB, and possibly loss of life, and just not your own ?

OP was after recommendations for a car, not a 4X4 or pie key pick up truck. I always buy all season tyres, which are fine here in Kent, currently on Goodyear Vector 4season Gen3 on my old 2004 Combo van, was on Kleber Quadraxer 2s previously. Very good grip in all weathers and last well, AND NO CRACKING.

2006 Master has Goodyear Cargo 2s Wolseley has Toyos, fine in the summer, useless on ice or snow and not great in the rain.

Observations from previous experience on my own vehicles, Avon and Bridgestone start cracking up after a couple of years. Michelin not great, unless you buy Pilot Sport, but too expensive for me. Kumho and Nexen are good mid range and last well. BF Goodrich for 4x4s are brilliant but start to degrade after many years, long before the tread has worn out. Firestone a bit skiddy.

Sunny, Longrun, Linglong, Matador Nankang, just nooooo. Pray you never have to stop quickly. Fine for a wheelbarrow, but keep a good grip on the handles.

I also fit my own, and get most of them from Camskill tyres.

Errrm. A timely reminder to check the date codes on your tyres?

I’m trying to put a late 90s Nissan back on the road. It's history is vague but it's been parked up for at least 10 years according to the tax disc, could have been a lot longer.
I took the wheels to the local tyre shop today for advice.
They pointed out the date code on the first tyre I asked them to look at … it was one of the original tyres that has been on the car from new nearly 30 years ago! They are ordering me a set of 5 new …

*236 (3 digits) = week 23, year 19?6 (1996 on this car)

Different car. I asked about getting 2 slow punctures / leaking rims fixed. The tyre shop refused to touch them as their shop policy was any tyres over 5 years old were scrap. One of mine was 20, I think the other was from a time before date stamps Plenty of tread, good grip, no cracking …

I currently have 2 new Hankook tyres in the garage, never fitted, with stickers on still. Trouble is they are 14 years old. I have them advertised on Gumtree as suitable for a trailer only.

I had a chat in person with the guys at my local VOSA/DVSA depot about this. As you will hopefully be aware, they are the body that administer the MOT test.

Officially, they have no view on this at all. Provided the tyre is not visibly worn out, cracked, perished, or damaged, it is not a problem or failure, so you can take from that what you will.

Off the record, this tyre age thing was brought about by the tyre companies themselves as a back covering exercise. Good for sales too.

Having said that, 30 years is pushing it a bit though, but if it has been out of sunlight, and not had load on it sitting for years, should be OK for a spare at least.
