I'm sure I've seen one of the British bike spares shops selling transparent side covers to use for setting float height.

I remembered those and had a look, but it seems no one has them in the UK now. There is a shop in the states but postage seems to take ages from there now with customs and whatnot.

and a bit of clear plastic tube running vertically upwards as @Rannsachair said.
The clear plastic lids tended to fail very quickly.

I may go that route, or I may turn the centre out of a cover and bond in a piece of glass.

Various shim washers are available if you need to adjust the float height rather than just the old fibre washers.

Once you go up in HP and/or use it for track or drag fun then they need to be welded to stop it twisting.

Or even be unlucky enough to jam it into first gear on an unexpectedly cold late autumn / early winter's morning still with summer oil in it.
Did that, crank twisted.
Still got that engine, and a replacement crank for it, will get around to replacing it some day.

Well yes, there's that too. Although most aren't as honest and usually tell a tall tale of derring-do that ends in mechanical tragedy.

I twisted the crank on my RD125LC banging it down a gear too far trying to avoid a bint in a Renault 5 on a roundabout

Drill a hole in a spare jet block base nut, sweat in a bit of pipe, then put a bit of clear tube on it.
Does the same job, and is a lot easier than fooling about with the float chamber cover plate.

You're missing the point though.

It may work just as well but it doesn't look as cool and won't take up anywhere near the same amount of time as fannying about with the lathe, glass, adhesive, solvents etc.

I think you should machine a new cover with a hole in it then press in an oil sight glass and machine max / min lines on the outside.

Waiting on parts and delivery for various jobs, so the crank parts clean up begins. It always feels better working with clean stuff not to mention making checks and measurements easier.

From the USA via Italy as it's cheaper that way than direct due to customs and tariffs.
