You can tell a dog "No" and while they may sulk they get the message. Cats on the other hand just assume you're a little slow on the uptake even for a shaved monkey and carry on with whatever it is.Speaking from experience I can tell you similar rules apply when cat sitting
I was house & cat sitting, fed the 2 cats at 8am (their usual feed time) and went back to bed for a couple of hours.
House owners came home 9am. Cats said they'd been ignored and starved for several days! Owner believed them so gave them 2nd breakfast.
Lesson learned: If a cat tells you something, double-check it before you believe it !
Dogs are no better, I'm dog-sitting a lovely elderly hound this week.
If I go out for an hour he forgets. When I get back he tells me some tall tails and waits for his reward for protecting the house.

As I've said in the past, I admire a dog's attitude and loyalty, but I aspire to a cat's attitude to life.
