When I need some extra space, I clamp a 2"x 4" with a piece of plywood attached, and clamp it in one of my vices. If I want to use an area on one of my benches, I can move stuff in the way and put it on the temporary plywood surface. Simple to make and store when not in use.

At the risk of going slightly off topic, what 6 pot cylinder head are you working on?
I’ve recently managed to handled one on to my Triumph Vitesse - which was quite a heavy lump.

Its off a BMW M57 diesel. I bought the engine cheap as it was a non starter. I sort of knew it would be one of the timing chains broken, so would be a bit of a project. It has 4 valves per cylinder, and some of them will be bent to some degree, so have to check them all.

I also have a Ford 590E engine I need to work on. Its a big 6 cylinder diesel from the 1960s. I recut the valves and seats a couple of years ago, and need to reassemble the head. Its twice the size of a Vitesse head and probably twice the weight. Which is real handy, as I have done my back in yesterday.

I do something similar with my circular saws, I clamp them in a workmate when I want to use them.

You'll have to do as I did for a couple of years , put stuff outside in super thick polyethene recycled feed sacks with the neck tied off and under the bag .

Today in my workshop I turned down a sleeve to a press fit for two bearings for someone, I enjoy doing work for others but can not find the incentive to do my own hobby work

Its a great idea, but what if you wanted to use the vice ?

I really, really, need to get rid of some stuff, but just can't bring myself to do it.

You bolt another vice onto the board! Then you can put another shelf in to it, to extend the flat storage space

Today I was able to clear enough stuff from a spot in my garage, and relocate it to our other house, to make room for the Boxford lathe I'm collecting next week.
Too much work for someone my age. The mind is willing, but the body sometimes is not.
