Those are bearing mounts
Those bearings will fit in them
They make an adjustable set up for alignment
those are used either as bracing together the previous shown items or on the opposite side of the engine block with long threaded bars to secure the set up in position.
Those are precision ground so can be used in a multitude of ways in machining
I don't know what this thing is but it's Berco as well so it's another component of this set up

A new (nearly anyway) motorhome to replace the disaster Transit we had up to now. It's an Eldis Riva Gold on a Boxer chassis. It hasn't got the oomph of the Transit, nor the slick gearbox, but hopefully neither will it have the pistons that split in half!
