As said previously many were acquired by preservation groups, however what helped the locos was that the carriages were easier to cut up so the yard workers concentrated on these.

Mad really getting rid of steam like they did, those lovely 9F locos should've been still going into the 90s or 2000s,
I believe some were less than 10 yrs old when they were just binned. Crazy...

A good number of the replacement diesel locos had a short life too when classes were deemed non-standard after scant few years service.
Shocking waste of resources especially when you see that some class 20s and 37s have had a service life of 60 years or more.
If EWS hadn't been allowed to be so spiteful in the late 90s then a few more locos could have had a longer life rather than being scrapped to prevent competitors investing in them; the way they have let the class 60s sit and rot at Toton is horrific.

In the spirit of the thread I bought myself a couple of Rapido N Gauge Peaks last week; class 45 and 46

The class 45 represents the same loco that I had in OO gauge at xmas 1981 and the prototype class 46 I saw at an open day at Coalville depot in the late 1980's

I'm not a foamer but I do love Peaks

The class 45 represents the same loco that I had in OO gauge at xmas 1981

I was based at Bedford Midland Road Station S&T in '80 and '81.
The Class 45 were hauling the Expresses through there then.
The vibrations through the ground and air when a Class 45 pulled out with a heavy train had to be felt to be believed!
