Very recently bought a lovely Squi.Jig 7.5" speed square. The amount I will use it I will have it forever, or so I thought.

Today, disaster. I cut a 6x2 noggin out of a stud wall with the circular saw. Speed square had been "safely" placed on a cross member below earlier on. I hadn't even considered where the Offcut would fall but had set the saw to not to cut all the way through the piece so it would hold in place.

The 600mm offcut hinged, broke off, and fell straight down onto the square some two or 3 foot below.

Me & Pal just looked at each other then stared at the square. It occurred in slow motion. We both said oh dear.

Square visibly bent.

Quick check using a flat edge of a sheet of ply and a pencil, the square is no longer square.

Guess I'll have to save up till after Christmas to replace it now.

I will try using the arbor press to straighten it, and see if the heel/sole plate can be shimmed back to squareness.

A holder is a nice idea in the workshop but not much use out onsite. I need a tool belt so I don't have to keep putting it down really.

A mate left this with me as spares / repairs..
seems to be a well built unbranded 2.5t jack, problems are a stuck valve in the body and stripped splines where the lock / unlock shaft fits inside the handle.


Any suggestions why the valve has stuck or how to free it?
I was using it and the valve was ok, mate used it and now it’s seized. We tried hammering the toothed cog to free the valve but it’s not moving.
