I got some new DCGW inserts today, the points have some weird discolouration though so probably no good, I reckon I'll throw them out to save them damaging a workpiece.

I kid of course, its PCD!

Photo makes it look more like a CBN, for hard turning, steels and carbide etc...? You can tell as the edges have a chamfer, instead of being dead sharp.

It's definitely PCD, unless someone put them in the wrong tray. It's a shame they're for turning actually, I could really do with some PCD milling cutters. I've got some hardened steel parts to do, and also quite a lot of GRP I need to figure out how to machine.

If you aren't butchering/blowing your tool budget continuously, you're not trying hard enough.

Looks like a double ended one of these, codes match.

You could make a milling holder for it easy enough. I have made many turning holders but no idea about milling geometry..

I have a few, heres a comparison if you look at the edge, pcd is right. Slightly chipped but usable cbn on left.

Cbn is the right tool for hard steel, where pcd would donate carbon to the steel and wear fast. Pcd is better for GRP or non ferrous. In theory cbn could do other materials but Ive only seen it with an chamfer edge.
For GRP milling I think I'd use a wood'ists carbide router cutter.

I doubt it has the relief angles for milling, maybe okay for flycutting but you'd never use it as an end mill without re-grinding it or setting it up with a ridiculous negative top rake. I might give it a go at home but this is at work, it's easier (And a better use of my time) just to give Ceratizit a load of money for proper PCD endmills. You get "compression cutters" which don't delaminate fibre reinforced composites, I've been meaning to get a handful and see how they perform.

I'll check the code on the box tomorrow, I'm sure it was PCD but I've just had a look on the site and seen some are labelled "PCBN" so maybe I saw that and got confused. It was definitely for hardened steel.

That's not a screwdriver, it's a combination paint tin opener and stirrer.

I couldn't find any info on Wyevale tools either. I didn't particularly want it (definitely didn't need it) but the screwdrivers were 2 quid each or 3 for a fiver. It's a pretty sturdy thing so as above + pry bar and chisel!

Thanks Brad, it’s spot on, just had to swap the spring retaining scroll pin and give it an oil - it’s been sat in Ed’s workshop getting dusty since he picked it up.

Ah thinking back I did put a stainless cotter pin in there, was it too small a gauge? The original pin was beyond repair when i painted it.

Ah thinking back I did put a stainless cotter pin in there, was it too small a gauge? The original pin was beyond repair when i painted it.

It was the right size, but the head was a bit too big so it kept jamming, fortunately Ed had a box of scroll pins in his workshop so I grabbed a couple and swapped it here.

Shop here carries them.

Even the motor factors carry them in different colours. I went for green cos that’s what Kim had and its the same application as me, but there’s yellow and brown as well but not sure what grades they are.
