I acquired some big cal ammo boxes from @Red'n'Black . I like these, small,strong and just big enough to take a ratchet, spanners and service kit for the machines.

And a couple of work lamps.

It's similar here - if a welded repair is required for MOT, when you present the car for re-test the welds must be visible. If it's a patch to an existing panel - for example a sill - then it must be seam welded around all edges. Oh, and suspension components cannot be welded to pass a re-test, so if my subframe has a hole in it, it either needs welding up before the test, or replacing if it fails. Or it was, last time I had to re-present a car after rust repair.

For repairs on subframes, they are allowed but need to be pretty much perfect and be prepared to fight your corner. Well that's the rule in NI anyway.

A long thin welding bead would also have been OK here, but not necessary and because of the lower heat input we decided on points - whose max. distance is set at 25mm.

At the beginning of the year we had a completely different problem on our RAV4, 1. Gen, last facelift: The upper front right wheel carrier had a hole rusted in it, you are not allowed to weld there, the original part is no longer available and these cars have become rare (unobtainable) on scrap yards ...

So we welded it beforehand and generously covered large areas of the front end and floor pan with deep black underbody protection.

At the rear end of the car there was a small hole that he would not have criticised, we welded that, left it open and showed it to him in particular - all good!

He can't complain about what he can't see in the first place ....

No.

There used to be a dive shop in Seaton that had a big tank at the rear of the shop & had a collection of standard dress sets that you could try out. They used to chuck in some bits & pieces for you to try to assemble while under, it’s not easy in that lot, how they used to work in it for any length of time I don’t know. They also had a big “pot” (decompression chamber) which would take about 8 people & take you down to 50 metres. As you got in, the would hand someone a hammer & say “if anyone is in trouble, hammer on the side” you soon find out if you suffer from claustrophobia!
