... a cordless straight grinder for tools with 6mm shanks - because I'm on the CAS platform (Cordless Alliance System), from Metabo.

I need to remove some undercoating and paint from the Unimog cab to be able to weld where I don't think I can get to otherwise.

From size, weight and price I am quite surprised - Metabo is quite proud of that machine with about € 300 without batteries or box.

First tries show that it has a dangerously high level of power!

Filter on the inlet is good. My grinder has that. Amazing the amount of crud it catches.

When is the wire brush coming…..

Some wire brushes are already present, James,

they've run pretty peacefully on cordless drills so far.

This now is a whole different animal, both hands firmly on the device at all times and yet the beast overcomes you.

In addition, the thing seems to alert you when you have too much imbalance in the tool, there must be a good number of sensors in it -
very interesting that.

More wire brushes are on the way, including coiled ones - they will finally break both my arms ....

Bought an Erbauer EAG2200 9" angle grinder. 85 quid.

This is only 5 quid less than a Makita GA9020S with soft start but no case but they only last 5 minutes
I've killed 3 Makitas so far, 2 just after one year, the other in a couple of weekends. Mainly used for backing off sandstone for walling.

Sandstone dust is a killer for grinders. Sounds like you need a wet saw.

I used a mates stihl saw when I was backing off a lot of stone, that had a bottle to dampen the dust. I use the Makitas for smaller jobs. I read that there was a faulty batch of on/off triggers on some so I got an updated version, that lasted about two weeks!

I bought the second as I thought I could use the older one for parts, and the third was when the second one died when I was working away and I my dry stone waller was doing some paving for me. So it was buy one or he goes home.

I did a quick autopsy on a couple, I couldn't' find anything major wrong with them. Brushes ok, leads not FUBAR etc. At some point I'll take a closer look. I do have another spare trigger, this shows up as an intermittent fault, use it all day, then it stops just before your finished, You swear at it a few times, your about to throw it down the yard when it starts again!

I'm short of time at the moment, so bought the Erbauer, it will be interesting to see how it copes, its currently cutting sandstone roof tiles. I have a patio to do next year then I should be able to put these in a box at the back of the barn for a few years

Sandstone dust is also a killer for people.
Silicosis is a nasty desease and you can get it from lots of sources, not just sand blasting.
Cutting concrete dry is a common source, cutting sandstone dry is similar but turbocharged.
For this type of thing, if I can't use water, I use a PAPR grinding mask.
If I can use water I still wear a PP3 mask but the amount of dust generated is tiny compared to dry cutting.

When is the wire brush coming…..

Here are the wire brushes, James, that have come in to date.

It seems certain that I will not only break some things with them in conjunction with the new toy, sorry tool, but will certainly hurt myself too.

The wire thickness is much too high, the brush diameter too large, add to that the twisted shape ....

To be sure, none of the brushes have a rated maximum speed even close to the speed of the machine ....

... so what could go wrong?

Wrecked a large cup brush on a 9" grinder.... brush 4500rpm... 9" was 9000.... lasted long enough for the job, and let go slowly.. sort of unpeeled the large rivet in the middle, and went loose.. luckily spotted it before it went really wrong
Only then did i notice the small print of the speed rating
