Today I acquired...........

Got back for visiting SAKO 243 ( Ed.) yesterday to find a 23 kg soft carboard box heavily wrapped in , " Fragile handle carefully " tape dumped on our doormat . It'd been well & truly DHL'd with the top crushed in & one corner split open which ran from bottom to top .

" OAF HOOK ! " was my first thoughts ...... that's those 30 half litre tulip Weck preserving glass jars & lids done for .
Alison helped me bring it to the dining table where I very carefully undid the top of the carboard box , .. the top had been crushed in some two inches below normal height . In the top was three inches of rolled corrugate carboard spread right across the packs of jars , under the five packs of six jars a similar thickness of corrugated cardboard plus a heavy duty tripple wall thick sheet of carboard .
On opening each box and carefully checking each jar & lid for cracks or chips I was amazed to find them all in perfect order

I have looked up how to contact RM and there is nothing about recieving other peoples post. They have removed any phone numbers for the local DO.

The same here: almost impossible to find a phone number, but finally possible with great difficulty and time.

But then all their cunning comes into play:
The call centre or the distributed individual agents who are then reached have obviously been specifically selected according to the limitations in the command of the local language ...

- not: give the newcomers a chance, which I totally would support,
but: in no case someone who has mastered the entry language level.

What a bunch of my lifetime has been wasted on this ... foaming at the mouth ....

Just be patient ... (and this from my keyboard of all people ...)

Beat me to it, @8ob - I was going to ask that question, although I'm no expert on road construction I have experienced paths being washed away after heavy rain (and having to repair them) .

Beat me to it, @8ob - I was going to ask that question, although I'm no expert on road construction I have experienced paths being washed away after heavy rain (and having to repair them) .

To the right of the bank is the road which has a camber the other way into a ditch so water doesn't flow down from the road onto the drive even in the heaviest of rain.

The ditch is a bit blocked up (Other side of the road and not bordering my property) but I've been onto the local Councillor to clean it out. If it's not done before the winter I've said I'll do it myself and dump the spoil out on the road for them to collect.


In fact due to tree cover even in the big storms you're pretty dry when you walk down the drive. All the spots that get a lot of water have had 6" twin wall put in to take the water away from the drive and towards the pond.

The drive itself has a decent camber on it as well to aid in any rain that falls directly on it.

It wasn't on my shopping list this morning but at £120 I thought it worth a go, and as I'll soon be home every night there's plenty of projects which will benefit from it. And I had to buy the pry bar set to get my debit card out of my wallet after it went into a "HOW MUCH????" sulk .

About 15 years ago they resurfaced our road, by dumping loose chippings down it. Most never stuck big holes after a month.
They resurfaced last week and I thought it was a good job, plenty of bitumen, stones and rollered. Annoying that two cars didnt move, or get towed out the way.

Few days later... Its crap, it hasnt stuck

I think that'll be a test of @8ob's driving skills since Huwie had no issue (nor any shunts) getting in with the stone on board.


Mind you Huwie was born and bred in this area - Bob had a baptism of fire a few weeks ago as to fairly standard Welsh roads.

This came the other day. Quite partial to the design of these. I've had a standard one on the van for a couple of years or so now, & they hold up well. Good for pouring from too, for the power tools.



The explo-safe bit is this:



Filled with a wire mesh. Supposed to aid heat dissipation. Means you can't shove the filler nozzle right in though, as with a standard can.

I brought a bottle of Bacardi 151 proof back from Puerto Rico once that had one of those on the neck of the bottle!! It had a flammable warning on the back and a big notice not to remove the “flame arrestor”

Shoddy workmanship is more likely the culprit than a defect with the material itself. Pretty evident from the patch that has lifted that no bond coat has been applied (or was poorly applied) before the new material was laid.
