I agree that you want the wedge to tighten as its pulled through the pulley. You also don't want the open ends to be able to ride up the pulley. I therefore vote A.

Narrow end in direction of travel or if unsure tabs trailing, so B.

Driving (countershaft) is at the top of the picture and mandrel is at the bottom of the picture.

So nearest to viewer is the slack side and it's moving downwards.

Doubt it. They’ve pallets of them at 10p in Tesco here.

My gran had something similar. That and an electric blanket was plugged into a 15amp wall socket.

Then like an old auto eject kettle lead they would be fired out.
