Today I collected this.....

Belt was loose, and I adjusted it when I got it in the shed.... and subsequently got a nasty-sounding knock from the electric motor & I thought uh-oh.... but its looking like all it is, is the pulley a bit loose on the shaft.
(The compressor started life I was told with a 3ph motor, and the 1ph motor was fitted by the seller when he got the compressor from his Father-in-law best part of 30-years back. The set dates fro 2-11-1972. Interesting fact is the motor comes from the GDR!.... so I'm thinking the motor might be a metric shaft, and the pulley is the original perhaps do Imperial... and the fit isn't perfect????)
One fault I have found... is while the set shuts off when it reaches full pressure - it doesn't cut back in when the pressure drops. The switch cover has been cut into so the switch can be operated manually.... probably cos its kaput.

I'd like to clean it and change the compressor oil, as well as straighten and repair the belt guard.
The gauge doesn't drop below 40psi when it's drained - but hopefully that's not a big issue.
I can't believe how quiet if runs and how lazy and slow it runs (motor is only1.5kw, 1350rpm, but it doesn't take ages to charge up to cut out.... I need to try and work out the pump rpm somehow.
If anyone has or knows where I might obtain a manual, and also knows what the proper oil/amount is for the 234 pump, I'd be grateful

The large phase capacitor on the motor gives me a hunch that this can be brought back to its old three-phase glory quite easily.
1,500rpm seems like a realistic rpm to me.

Why don't you take good, legible pictures of all the nameplates: motor, tank, and compressor, then I'm sure one will be able to help you out here.

So your question about the oil means there is no oil sight glass? Everything clean around there?
Is there an upper and lower oil plug, maybe a separate drain plug? Often the necessary oil level can be estimated quite well due to the layout and design.

In any case, find someone with an instrument to inspect the tank from the inside, digital boroscopes don't cost much these days,
many people already have one.
A bursting tank is not funny, almost never without serious injury or worse, you want to have seen the inside of the tank before!

Good luck with the project, looks like a pretty durable machine.

I will take some pics of the plates etc.... though I already know the motor isn't original as its East German!
The pump is a model 234, so I believe that's z very well-established Ingersoll Rand stalwart pump of many years Production.
The tank/receiver is British made and 3/16 Imperial inch thick (just under 5mm) - so they are pretty sturdy.
I'd like to get it tested (no idea where)....but I have given it a good tap with a hammer and listened out for a different and less solid "ring" from the steel at the bottom of the tank versus the sides, looking for any indication of corrosion, softness and a dull thud indicating it is compromised.... and can't detect anything.... so hopefully it will turn out to be sound .
I've had it running until the pressure switch cuts out a couple of times with no drama (but I've no way of confirming if the indicated pressure is accurate, but the pump is quiet , no knocks I can hear to suggest knackered bearings or excessive wear - and the gauge does show a steady build up of pressure.
I plugged in a die grinder that would have my 50L Clarke cutting in in only a few seconds.... and it ran it for ages as the pressure steadily decreased.
So, so far, nothing too terrible (early days I know) other than the iffy motor start switch.

Anyone who does a lot with engines now has a digital boroscope, ask around.
Your tests were correct and important, but not enough.
You need to know what it looks like inside.

Many of the Chinese ebay-dealers of these boroscopes offer a return period, you have nothing more to lose than return postage at most.

So after many months seeking my superego poligrip pilers (water pump pilers or whatever better name we can call them) I've gave up ...(lost them I don't know where)
Bought those knipex cobra in 250mm size .
TBH I wanted to buy those since I've seen them for the first time but you know , knipex is expensive.
Anyway I like them an the brand as I already have some insulated knipex tool , still have to test them .
New pair of stick welding gloves , this time different brand from what I usually buy , and they look better and much more thick,so I'm hoping for the best.
