Not necessarily.
I've got blacksmiths tools with wooden handles.
(And with metal handles through an eye in the head).

Is a fuller the correct name, though? I would call it a "hot chisel" (as opposed to a cold chisel).
I *think* a fuller has a rounded edge for shaping - as in the "blood groove" (or fuller) of a sword?
And a swage has a flat head (like a hammer)?

Might be wrong - my head word list thing is playing up again.
The point is, they're named for the use, not for the style of handle.

It doesn't look like it's ever been clouted so I don't think it's a blacksmith's tool.
Probably just some weird-shaped wood chopper.

Motor Standard. Came from the same place as my tractor, for free (sort of, I fixed his ride on mower the other day) This is big, stands three feet tall and has a 2T engine of about 15hp. Harrow included with the plough. Unused for over 20 yrs, but all there. Other neighbour cheerilly told me about the guy in the village who selected reverse by mistake on a similar one and it chewed him up...

Now I need a straw hat and dog to look the part.

Yes.
Now I've woke up a bit, I realise: but aren't they used for shaping a sharp bend/corner, rather than for cutting?

It's a long time since I did any "smithing" - and I was never formally taught- I just "saved" a load of tools from an abandoned quarry (before they were buried *in* the quarry), and read some books, then made some knives+chisels/punches in a charcoal forge.

@The_Yellow_Ardvark and others, where can I buy a new 14" (?) handle, what is left of the existing handle is around 28x 38mm where it enters the metal of the head.
There is a seller on Ebay that lists what I think would be suitable item no. 264499566360 but as two of my messages re that item have been ignored I doubt I will be giving them any of my money even if it is suitable.

I've got two of them - one with handle, one not.

Now I live in Yorkshire now . . .but one came via my dad (and probably his dad) - who was Northamptonshire, and the other via my mum's dad, who was Buckinghamshire . . . why did either of them have a Yorkshire pattern? Admittedly, my mum's dad did once show a bull at the Yorkshire Show in the 50's (slept in the stall with it! Decided Yorkshire folk were strange, and never went back ) but can't imagine he would have bought anything there.

Generic name would be a bottom set or cold set but it doesn't look like one to me. Would typically have a striking anvil behind the handle. Looks like a regular home made axe/hatchet.
