@Craig-SM mentioned about the grease gun he got the last day and said it was good. I have never been able to get any of the grease guns I had to work properly, they would work for 3 or 4 squirts then you would have to bleed it and the cycle repeated.
I used to have an old style one that was my dads that you filled with grease and it was great but inconvenient, I always regretted giving it away.
Ok so enough blethering, I order the grease gun last night and it arrived an hour ago so I put a cartridge in it and a few pumps and it was squirting grease 3m or more
Tried it on the profile rail trucks on the plasma and unbelievable, worked exactly as it should and I greased all 8 trucks and not an issue, never had to bleed it once. I have been on a greasing spree and have used at least half a cartridge up already and it is brilliant, amazing how such simple things give pleasure to simple people
The only downside so far is the strength needed to get the gun off the nipple, I pulled out a couple on the trucks as they are only screwed into the plastic ends but I found that wiggling it in a circular motion as I pulled it off helped and it does seem to be getting easier so maybe it will free off a bit.
Anyway grease gun here.

I also got a 1/4" socket set from Halfords and it seems nice although I haven't used it much yet.

@Hood I predict the next mention of your newly acquired grease gun will be how do you stop the oil bleeding out of the grease and leaking from every orifice on the gun!

I went shopping yesterday and found this old hoe head, gave it a clean around potential logo areas and hey presto! It’s Whitehouse Bros of Cannock. This brand pre-dates Cornelius Whitehouse’s hedgehog brand. Very nice for $3, this will be from the turn of the century. I’ll clean it and put it back to use.

Does the blade on the push hoe look as though it can be knocked out when it's well worn down and a new high carbon blade be inserted ?

Hood they now make a quick release coupling which has a release tab like some tyre inflators to help stop ripping the grease nipples out.

Think I remember seeing them in mst a couple of months back.

Thanks, I think I will get one, could never get the normal grease guns to work very well, constantly having to bleed them etc.

Filling a piston grease gun with out a cartridge of grease .

The way you fill the old grease gun is important . Do it in stages pulling the piston back 1/2" AT A TIME & locking it with the clip or the chain . Loading the grease with a spatula like making an ice cream cone up with soft iced cream , making sure you don't put air in the grease . Some times it's worth giving the reservoir body lower edge a gentle tap down on the edge of a table as you fill each level as this helps get any air bubbles up to the top .

Having a warm grease & gun also helps .. loading a grease gun at minus 10 oC with solid grease is not often very successful .

I've often seen guys try and use the gun cylinder & piston as a syringe and suck the grease in as they push the body into the grease... they never seemed to have much success as they were always having to bleed the gun.

You can get bolt head type grease nipple and a special slide on adaptor for the grease nipple . All you do is side the adaptor across the bolt head till it homes and slide it off when you have greased up .

See this eBay number button head . " 180360306568 " . there are also hexagonal heads , . adaptors are around a tenner for two . . they certainly help when you have a hundred or more to do on one vehicle or bit of machinery . I liked the buttons for you can grease up at almost any angle with ease & they work well in plastics .

@Hood Glad you were impressed too, at £30 a bargain. I mentioned the connector was tight but pushing at an angle like in a twist motion and comes off easier. Maybe just needs breaking in but I’d prefer that to grease squirting out the sides.

Thanks but I was actually meaning the normal cartridge guns, the type you get everywhere with the normal lever style action, just could never get a decent one.
The gun I had that was my dads was the type you are talking about and it worked very well, it was just the inconvenience of having to fill it rather than pop a cartridge in that made me give it away.

I actually have button head adapters but I don't think you can get the grease nipples in 1/4UNF although having said that I have never really looked.

With the cartridge guns can you change the type of grease over by just swapping the cartridge over and bleeding out the hose of the old grease? I have to grease the Surfs UJ's and prop shaft etc and if I remember correctly it takes two different types of grease which puts me right off having to clean out the old gun I have.

Yes, just pull the rod out, unscrew the top, release the rod and the cartridge pops out. Pull the rod back down, pop in the new cartridge and screw the top on then release the rod and pump until the new grease comes out.
