So when is the bandsaw's birthday?
I like the stand. I scored mine from a wood botherer, the stand was a wooden structure that could double as a road bridge. I chopped it down but a nice metal one would be nice.

All the talk of monitors reminds me I replaced one of my 19" monitor with a 24". I didn't mind mismatched monitors but my old 19" looks crap compared to the 24".
But the 24" came with a stand for a 34" monitor.
Maybe I should just go straight to a pair of 34" monitors?

excellent machines, my father still has his in regular use, seem to recall it was dark blue in colour though.. His saw is on a metal base as well. I'm a long way away from it, but if needed, I'm sure I could get the old man to take some photos as well.

Stand with it is wood as well but in need of replacement. Haven't had a proper look yet as plate is coated in paint but looks to be 15/03/1955 or 56

The inside of the stand is in what I would describe as 'duck-egg blue.' The green Hammerite is someone's idea of a joke

My big bro referred to his extended length narrow boat as , " The Skip " when he inserted the extra section in it and then bespoke rebuilt everything to suit him& his wife

Not today, but a couple of days ago, I had an old, non badged, all but in name Warco 918/920 lathe delivered by a courier. A lovely member of this forum sold it to me, palleted it up, and organised delivey.

I know great wisdom on this forum advised that I should get something more substantial, but I know my limitations regarding workspace, experience, and what the lathe will be used for.

It was dropped off by the courier next to my front door, and I spent the next 4 hours dismatling it to manageable proportions. I’m planning to clean, paint, and rebuild it (best way to learn how something works), then learn how to used the bloomin’ thing.

Only problem so far? The lathe is missing the cross slide bracket, and one of my customers advised me to call Warco. Unfortunately when I described the old lathe, first words from chap was “before my time”, the next was “It’s the policy of the company not to sell parts to non Warco customers. After all a Warco customer might need that part”.

Funny thing was, when I was calling them, I was looking at a picture of a Warco lathe on their website, showing the bracket on a brand new lathe.

Never had a company refuse the offer of selling a part to a non customer before. Are lathe spares so rare?

Otherwise, looking forward to working on it.

It were Ruffian who dun the kind deed. As to pictures, once I’d dragged the lathe’s carcase into the big hut, I was too tired to think “pictures”.

It’s going to live in the little hut, but I need to build a workbench for it first. The plan is to tidy up each part in one hut, then transfer and fit the parts in their final home. I need to make up some ‘dollys’ to put under the lathe to allow me to move it about during rebuild. Once completed, I’ll remove them and fasten the lathe onto the bench, because at 250lb, it won’t be getting move again in one piece.

I shall take pictures en route, I promise.

sure would have lent a hand for an hour in exchange for tea and bickie's Think about it once you get the bench built and you're ready with that biggest/heaviest bit ready to transfer.

You put me to shame , I had to get a neighbour to lend a hand with my Myford - but my defence I can't do heavy lifting due to health issues.

The engine crane was bought when I bought my lathe. Together with a strop, wooden and steel poles, blocks and pallets you become quite adept at moving the previously impossible.

Don't go out of your way, if they are not on hand it doesn't matter. Only wanted to see if pulley is original and how cover looked to recreate it. Stand isn't original with mine either.

I couldn't get to the motor last night. It's under a ton of stuff, but here's some pictures of the belt cover. Let me know if you need more detailed measurements.


The pulley on the drive wheel is approximately 6 1/4" diameter. when I can get to the motor I'll measure that too, I think it may be the same.

The 918 was made for a few different importers, others may be a bit less er.. truculent? than Warco!
The 918s Warco supplied had a manufacturing error/problem with the shaft spacing in the headstock, so really noisy gears - I hope yours doesn't suffer the same! Good little lathe though, otherwise

I'm guessing the part missing is the bracket that brings the cross-slide screw out to the handwheel, or is it at the rear of the slide?

My little hut is so little, at 5 foot tall, I can touch the walls on two sides with my arns stretched out (and I don’t have weirdly long arms), and it only takes an addition of a 17mm spanner in one hand to touch the other two.

My plan is to rope in a keen neighbour to lift the lathe bed onto the bench. Once that’s done, everything can be reattached at my leisure.

Yes, just behind the graded dials, and it covers/supports the screw between the handle/dials and the cross slide itself.

Since I have been told that Warco, along with Chester, Grizzly, etc all imported these machines, and rebadged them, I found it surprising they were so ‘precious’ about their spare parts.

Their general manner was a bit ‘off’ too. Hardly ecourages you to buy from them, if they can’t even be helpful to check with you whether the lathe is actually theirs or not.
