What’s it based on?

It's called a Multicar - made in Germany and they were originally an East German company that has been bought a few times since the fall of the Iron Curtain. A lot of councils etc use vehicles like these for parks, road sweepers etc. A few rail maintenance companies have used them in the UK over the years. Manchester Trams have 2 with cherry pickers on them for overhead power line maintenance.

It has a VW 1.9 diesel engine, 4x4, high, low and diff lock fitted. Not sure if the one we are getting tips or not, but there was a small Hiab crane lying in the load bed, so hopefully that'll remain with it!

Cheers Slim! McCulloch Rail have been pretty helpful to us over the last couple of years. We had them in with a couple of their specialist Tracked Rail Transposers (TRTs) to lift and recover 3 sets of switches and turnouts from our old yard last year. This year we've had use of their blasting gear to clean up some body panels for one of the Barclay diesel locos we are restoring. A big help is that one our volunteers, Peter, is their workshop mechanic! Peter tipped me off that the boss was looking to off load the truck, so I wrote them a letter enquiring if it was available. Thankfully it was!

My dad used to get whole locos and rolling stock by doing just that. He got one out of a refinery when their safety guy noticed the commutator sparking and banned it's use there and then. They donated the little shunter and then he wangled a lubrication deal out of them - free engine oil for the locos

The group have had plenty of locos and rolling stock through the years donated in that way. Sadly, quite alot of it was the target of scrap metal thieves armed with OxyAcetylene about 13 years ago during a period when the group were moving to our current site as a result of the landlord not renewing the lease.

Starting middle of November I'm moving to a canal mooring in the sticks where there are no skips and nothing to acquire, I'm just going to finish the fit out of my boat, order a tonne of coal, build a shed, grow a beard , get a dog, and wear crocs all day.

There is a pub 5 mins down the road with a large selection of real ales which will be my only contact with civilisation.

Today [well, last night] my Amolco mill arrived, thanks to @spencer 427 and @fizzy for all their help in getting it to me.

Just 'de-crated' it yesterday and spent a little time today seeing what's what. I've decided to give it a good clean, rewire the motor [enlarge the pic to see why, but I want an NVR on it anyway ] and fit a new drive belt while I'm at it. I've no way of knowing the condition/age and for all they cost it's as well done now.
I won't be going to the lengths I did with the Myford, but I've waited long enough for one that a little longer won't harm. Once it's together and in place I'll not be able to move it easily......

I also want to find out about the Clarkson Autolock chuck and collets, as I've never seen one before.

Anyway, a couple of snaps of where I'm at

Only thing with the Auto Locks is you really need to use the screwed shank cutters as that is how they lock. The cutter screws into the collet and there is a centre point inside the chuck which aligns with the centre hole in the cutter. If the cutter turns it screws further into the collet pushing the collet further up against the end cap and thus tightening the grip.

I see you have loads of Clarkson collets - jealous now. Better than the ER chucks IF you can get the screwed cutters.
So happy it got there safe - well done Spencer for the packing!

Disagree there, Clarkson is limited to the cutters you can use and an ER collet should grip every bit as good unless it is junk in the first place.

Yes you are more limited but the Clarkson should never let go. My ER32 did the other day - not very dramatic in fairness - couldn't work out why the cutter was getting longer..................

If that is the case then it is one of two things, you didn't tighten it enough or it is a cheap crap collet/holder. Collet nuts with bearing rings make a huge difference as well.
