I don’t doubt for one minute that the car is safely supported, but please please try to avoid putting your head inside the wheel arch.
If it slips off the stands your back will snap like a carrot.
No offence - it’s just a pet hate of mine and makes my toes curl when I see it.

I totally agree with you, There are 2 very heavy duty axle stands under the vehicle i have seen a guy working under a transit just supported by a jack and every 5 minutes they have to jack it back up as the jack was leaking...
i placed the wheels off his van on top of each other and pushed them under the cross member to at least give him a chance.

I totally agree with you, There are 2 very heavy duty axle stands under the vehicle i have seen a guy working under a transit just supported by a jack and every 5 minutes they have to jack it back up as the jack was leaking...
i placed the wheels off his van on top of each other and pushed them under the cross member to at least give him a chance.
Today I read about a young lad preparing his car for an MOT.
He used a jack on some wheels and a block of wood
It all collapsed and he was found several hours later, dead

Very very sad news, I always tell younger car guys about using jacks to lift cars then working under them, 5 minutes of preparation for working under a car can save days in hospital and a life time of damage, being young can often make you unaware of danger.

Today I acquired.
This 8.5 inch Taylor chuck. She in great condition. It will make the finishing touches to my empire lathe. I will be doing a short thread of how they come apart and the internals

Found this yesterday in a roof space.
Had been there for a long time. It was thick in spiders webs and their remains.
What to do with it.?
Oh yes, I have a spare shaft.

No power tools were used to clean this hammer up.
Head off, drilled through with a hand drill and then punched out.
@slim_boy_fat Yes the shaft was dead. The shaft had a split from just below the head for 50mm.
There you can see the state of the rust and the shaft hole being cleaned up.
The head is 3lb and you can see it does clean up well with, wire brush, files and emery cloth.
Wedged with a beech wedge and I left the shaft recessed a bit as I wanted to try and flood it with a epoxy Shaft fitting kit I have from America.
I will not be using it again.

Right, now to the real acquisitions. Met a chap a little bit along the street and stopped to blether. He said "Oh, I'm glad you stopped, I found a couple of things while looking for something else and thought you might find a use for them, being into metalwork an' all. [He's into woodworking].
So, we have exhibit A [I know what it's for but do any of you]. It belonged to his Dad who ran a local garage until he retired, and is no longer with us. The name "M Brown" is stamped on the underside, so it might be an Apprentice/student test piece. That wasn't his Dad's name.
And exhibit B: Neither of us know what it is/is for. It's very heavy for it's size so possibly cast steel or iron, not done any magnet, file or spark test on it - in truth I'm reluctant to and I'm not even sure I'd know how to exactly decipher the results [I know a little
]. Clearly for clamping something, but what? No markings on it either.
Apologies for the poor pics, not up to standard, but at least I remembered the mug and I'm sure you'll get the idea.
