Today I acquired...........

Sometime last year I acquired the battery on the left along with several other batteries. No use to me as I had no charger or tool to use it but I kept it anyway!

Last week I acquired the drill body, a bosch 24v sds, no idea if it worked.

Last night I acquired the drill & charger on the right.

Put them all together tonight & I've acquired a Bosch 24v sds drill & charger working perfectly plus 2 working batteries that still hold some charge.

Batteries will need some refurbishment but one managed 2 x 18mm holes through a 6" concrete block so it will be fine for small holes as it is.

I still have one of those Bosch 24V SDS drills it only got retired when I changed the 14V drill driver to 18V LiMH and got the 18V SDS in the same kit. Nice old SDS, a bit heaver than the 18V, when new I used to be able to use it constantly until both batteries were flat then had the long wait for the first battery to be re charged. The drill never gave up, it was the chargers that died with that kind of constant use.

Yep that's good for you. I've got a very similar one (Same body but only one scale on the dial and the range knob is 200, 2000, 20000), gets used all the time to check my machines are the right speed, belts aren't slipping etc. Perhaps not as useful as a non-contact digital one but it's heavy and with that, comes a hefty coolness factor.

Think mines actually brown and sharpe but looks identical.
Put it to use checking my speeds on the lathe. 15 seconds and times by 4. Once I allowed for the faster that original motor the readings were about spot on to the quoted speeds. Better than the optical I bought, was doa.

Haven't got around to fitting my digital tachos yet. Another tuit.

A power cut in the 50mph winds that were gusting across the countryside near me.
Happy to report the genset is powering this as I type, and glad I sorted out a quick change-over routine for power the shack and essential lighting on the property, for it was verging on no fun doing it in the cold and dark (all right, I was well wrapped up and had plentiful LED torches).
The genset has a 16A socket and a wander lead feeds a plug box with a pair of 16A, a 32A and a double 13A socket mounted on the face.
Easy to hook things up.
I'm also glad I sussed an easy start routine for the unit - nearly got caught out the last time when I left it with fuel in the carb. The sod didn't want to go the next time I tried it. Luckily that was only a test start, and it told me the best way is to run the float bowl dry when shutting down. A couple of priming pulls, then ignition on, pull and away ti goes.

Today I acquired a ****** off Dad...

He got bored of me pilfering free stuff from a house that’s being cleared out. The two hardwood doors are amazing though, and the oak headboards are a win. You almost never see oak here. Some other random wood from an old mangle, I suspect it’s silvered oak. These may go towards my workbench or a table for the Fobco Star. A nice Brades hatchet was part of the score, and a chainsaw horse for large logs. There is more too. I managed to smuggle it past the authorities and into the workshop, pics to follow!

Yeah, it's a United Power UP170 engine - clone of a Honda, as they all are.
I wait to see how long it lasts in service, but results from others vary widely. I suspect a lot of the short-lived ones are badly maintained or over-driven, but there's an element of luck in getting a good one. I assume Jefferson has some input into quality control at the UP factory for the engines they buy.
Power cut lasted 8 hours, three of which were using the genset, and it barely used 3 litres of petrol, so that's not too bad. A tankful will last 11 hours according to the handbook, so that seems about right.

In his defence he sometimes doesn’t see eye-to-eye with my vision for the workshop. He sees a lot of ‘old stuff’ going in and because he doesn’t spend much time in there doesn’t appreciate the use of it. I’ve also got the lathe in bits so it’s doubly cluttered atm! We’re planning a partition of the garage building so the doors could be really handy. The oak boards I want to build a workbench top out of.

Good car boot today. I knew that 2 old hands at my local Car boot would be back trading. So my friend and I went along.
Plenty of time to look around before trading started.

A large wooden parallel clamp, it needs a clean up and a good waxing. I have no ready use for it. But I liked the look and the craftsmanship what went into making it. £5:00.




Wire locking pliers. To replace my set what went "walk about" years ago. They are stiff from I hope is lack of use.

Looks like early Kamasa. I can't say I liked their ratchets, but never managed to break any of their sockets or extensions; cheap and cheerful aimed at the Sunday diy market, but good value for money.
