I know it's Chinese and everything and some people with better equipment wouldn't touch them with a barge pole but I still thought it was a very good price. They had four left last time I checked. It is going to replace my clapped out three jaw. I could have bought a second hand three jaw Pratt Burnerd but chances are the scroll might be shot or the jaws worn. At least this is new. UK warehouse so delivery was just a few days.

Personally I would have opted for a 3 jaw.
4 Jaw self centring chucks can be problematic as they will tend to grip fully with only 2 of the 4 jaws. Even if the chuck itself is very accurate then the work piece has to be likewise to get consistent grip on all 4 jaws.

I think the equivalent three jaw is about three times the price. To be honest a four jaw wasn't my first choice but the price persuaded me. That's good info though Hood, thanks.

You can get Chinese 3 jaws from the likes of Chronos for under £100 but you have it now so work within its limitations and all will be fine

And the advantage of a non-self-centring 4-jaw is that you can offset the workpiece if the job calls for it.

I already have a quality four jaw independent by Pratt Burnerd for the lathe. This cheap one is just for chucking stuff up quickly where it's not too critical. I have another lathe too for that matter as you can never have too much stuff.

I'm 68 and a retired blacksmith. If a fellow 'smith referred to working over the horn, beak, beck, pike or bick, I'd immediately know what they meant.
However it's more than possible that a hobbyist who's new to the trade/craft and just bought their first anvil, might not and the term horn is more descriptive but is as commonly used as bick or beck.
But thanks for you contribution.
