Fearsome in the hands of anyone who's made even a rudimentary study of martial arts edged weapon use. It works exactly the same way and I would take a walking stick against a knife any day, let alone one made of lignum, that's a serious bone breaker!Retrieved it, found in one of the boys (men) rooms, it had a brass plaque on it, which he took off and lost!, so after testing it on him, found it still works fine and produces yelps with low effort.
Will make a replacement plaque, and it's a bit short for me as a walking stick, not that I need one yet, but have some bronze and brass so may make a doodah to raise the walking end.
Googled Iron Wood, Olea capensis apparently, lovey grain and no splits, it may not look much but it is seriously weighty and likely fearsome in Zulu hands - less so in mine
