In a fit of stupidity I had a 1950 series one 80” I was driving in the winter with no canvas, and parking outside. Water ran off the floor plates directly onto the freewheeling section of the transfer box, it must’ve gradually filled up the transfer box over a number of weeks through the linkages because one day when I was driving it a pressurised jet of emulsified oil shot up through cut away section of the floor plate all over my legs. I stripped the box and it was absolutely fine still with no water damage.
I sold it for £16,000 soon after!!!
What year did you sell it?Sold my 80” for £500, after I’d restored it![]()
Do we get a build thread? That's a project I've wanted a go at for years.Today I acquired a new mountain bike frame, some assembly requiredView attachment 427845
What year did you sell it?
Back when you could buy cars for £30,Mmm, about 1990

if you knew where to look![]()
I will do a build thread on it, might not be the fastest project in the world as I seem to be really busy at the moment, but do hope to make a start on it soon.Do we get a build thread? That's a project I've wanted a go at for years.
I worked with a guy who went on a weeks course (somewhere in Yorkshire I think?) where he got to build his own bike frame. I don’t know much more detail than that as I’m not really into cycling but it sounded interesting from an engineering point of view.Do we get a build thread? I fitted a pair about 15 years ago, one failed after about 10 years, the terminal sheared off with vibration I suspect.I converted my Defender type mirrors to heated with a couple of 99p elements from e-bay.
(9 years ago and still working)
What a difference in damp weather!
Electrical Heated Windscreen is wonderful too!
Blob of glue gun glue to hold the wire near the terminal helps stop "The Vibes Man!"I fitted a pair about 15 years ago, one failed after about 10 years, the terminal sheared off with vibration I suspect.
Mine has a heated screen as standard and aircon, which is hand for demisting the interior.
There are quite a few places that offer bike building courses. Some have a reputation for getting you to build a bike but without really teaching you the skills to build another one after, where as a few are better at actually teaching the skills needed. I think one of the best regarded was the 'bicycle academy' but that closed at the start of the year. The courses aren't cheap, but are about the same as getting a custom frame made.I worked with a guy who went on a weeks course (somewhere in Yorkshire I think?) where he got to build his own bike frame. Don’t think it was cheap, but he wasn’t short of a bob or two!
Hang on - I said I was buying some that's all. Not had a chance to test properly yet!Having been recommended by @fizzy ,some rust treatment.
The surprisingly effective sprung dot punch is a big improvement on my eclipse auto centre punch, leaves a decent divit and it’s a rolson, faith restored, with this anyway.View attachment 427955
