I also got the anvil up on the stump with the help of a mate and some ratchet straps - it’s marked 110kg. I now need to find some chain now to quieten it down a bit.

It is not clear to me how you are going to attach the anvil with a chain, but it is clear that the connection between the anvil and its base is elementary and non-trivial.

This HERE seems to me to be a pretty good solution - the videos of him are worth watching anyway.

In that case it would be even more important to watch the linked video, because it works better than with chains and much better than this anvil has been screwed down in the past.

Without proper attachment to the base it will ring terribly even with chains wrapped around - and how does that look btw?

I forged some staples out of 6mm square bar as hold downs, and then wedged it all round to level it up / compensate for the uneven base.

As @Seadog says, I just need the chain to reduce the ringing.

Our local place was selling all the small Husqvarna chain saws of "cheap" as they seemed to think all the smaller chain saw buyers were going over to battery, I did look but they were still a bit rich for me!

Storm Eunuch threw a granite headstone into my workshop and up onto the bench, I know it was windy but bugger me! I thought about starting a seven page thread asking how to move it back to the cemetery but ultimately decided it would make a nice spot to keep my height master.



It's a 630x400mm surface plate, second hand so probably not as flat as it once was but still by far the flattest thing I've got, there's no visible chips, pits or rust marks anyway. I'll need to make a stand for it, is it frowned upon to use wood? I've got some 6x3s in the garden.

The height master has gone back into it's foam lined, desiccated box, it'll rust in no time otherwise, it only came out for demonstration purposes.

I've often thought about that & think you might be better off without the chain so the anvil & worked piece resonates with each hammer blow and does not get a bruising dead blow when it does not . It would be interesting if folks in a friendly not authoritarian way could discus the advantages disadvantages of a chain wrapped anvil . It's only on TV in recent years I've ever seen the fad of chains being used .
I'm 71yrs old and have been around blacksmithing & farrier work for most of it .

Reminder :- Now's a good time to get hold of a couple of decent sections of tree trunk for various workshop uses before it gets cut up for firewood baulks or planks etc.

The chain is wrapped round the waist of the anvil base and welded /bolted or otherwise secured . It's supposed to stop the anvil ringing /resonating when the worked piece is struck I've always understood that the Blacksmith used the resonation tone & volume as to how hard they strike the hot work piece, rather than just batter away on a dead anvil & lose the fine tune work . In my army apprenticeship days ( 1966 - 1969 ) our anvils were set on heavy malleable cast iron stands .. I guess the 1,000 or more navy years for the navy's shipwrights & 300 plus years of the army having blacksmiths who have them set like that .... there has to be a reason behind it .

Of course, for SWMBO - because she is a pretty bright girl - it couldn't remain hidden for long what dangers the combination of rotating machine parts and loose jumper sleeves could pose.

So she went on a quick search and found what she was looking for:
You can still buy sleeve protectors similar to those used by accountants and other office staff in the 60s and earlier.

And while she was at it, she also found some made of suede for welding:

(how selfish some women are, just because she doesn't feel like taking care of the jumpers with burn holes anymore)



And a bit of steel for chopping also came, 11SMn30+C - but I ordered that myself.

Having light cotton canvas or heavy cotton drill / denim sleeve pull on's is the way I've ended up going soft cloth can still get caught & anything nylon melts

My other anvil is fine, but this one I’ve just acquired is literally deafening in use - I already suffer with tinnitus and don’t want to worsen matters. My first anvil is on a green oak stump and sounds just fine, the new one is on a piece of very dry timber so that may not be helping, I’m currently gently watering it to see if that damps things down, I’m not keen on using chain.
