Tig Welder - what do i "actualy need"

I Don't think it's anything like metric - in those sizes the thread pitches are really coarse and crude.

BSP OD's don't measure up either because they're in fractional inchices not exact like what I've got to live with.

Could be an American thread suppose, but then there's so many of them.

Actually you were just about right that most brass pressure threads are BSP, apart from ...

... all those American ones.

They seem to be based on our simple and sensible system of BSP/BSW/BSCycle/BS-take-your-pick/etc/etc, but add even more fun to thread identification by continuing to randomnly mix and match flank angles, heights, pitches, and chamfers.

The internal thread on my flowmeter is actually 1/8th"NPTx27tpi, I only mention this because that's also the external thread of the little pocket sized CO2 bottles. (what a 0.400" BSP would have been).

Funnily enough, every cheapo street market stall metric tap and die set seem to go from M3 to M12 - but add a 1/8th NPT tap and die for luck.

I suppose this must be proof of the survival of the commonist thread?

Just for the hell of it, I'm going to work out the threads of various TIG end caps - bound to be ANC/ANF/AN-whatever.

P.S.

Flowmeter working fine with the disposable bottles - just use a SIP reducer and 10mm threaded copper pipe. Every drop counts!

Yes American threads are slightly different, when i first started up on my own my uncle lent me a gas set, american made Victor set. Now thinking to myself as and when i had the money i would remove various bits from the set he gave me and replace with bits i had bought myself. As luck had it someone gave me a saphire 5 cutting head, almost brand new. So i decided to get a saphire 5 shank, thinking i could give my uncle back the torch and use the rest until i replaced more. So got back and attempted to fit the shank to the gas pipes, a very bad fit, so back down to BOC and got some pipes ( i had realised the problem that it was US thread), think the regs would have a UK thread, but the torch was a US thread. So nice new pipes, great. Sapphire 5 shank fits a dream, but opps pipes dont fit to regs. So back down BOC and 2 new regs and flashback arresters, which all fitted together nice. Just cost me a fortune, but at least i gave me uncle back the gas set in one hit lol

Hi,

found a site the other day with printable charts showing various bolt sizes, thread sizes, etc. I've printed out a set and laminated them for my workshop...

one point to check is that you set your printer option to give a 'true' print and not 'fit to page' or anything. There's a ruler printed out on the bottom of each sheet to check that it's at the right scale.

Not sure what type of cages he is planning on making, but the drag race rulebook says:
"All 4130 chrome moly tube welding must be done by approved TIG heliarc process; mild steel tubing must be approved MIG wire feed or TIG heliarc."

Regarding FIA approval etc.
If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest you get the rule book for the classes you plan to build for and probably speak to the santioning body if you aren't sure. Seems a bit of an elementary question really!

Depends which model your talking about?

They source equipment from all over, a lot is Eastern block. I think some of the tigs are Chinese but they have not long done a deal with a Italian supplier so some of it will be from there.

TIG On T45

Hello, I've just read your post with regard to the roll cage material, as you probably know that T45 can be prone to cracking sometimes caused by too much heat input, just be aware that the TIG process can put more heat into the joint depending on the amount of filler material you use, also carefully check the filler material you use is compatible with the parent material. Pulse will reduce the heat input and asthetically it will look better, you mentioned that you vistited Pro drive, I have worked with them they use inverter machines made in Austria and Germany. I agree with the other members, buy quality, Lorch is a good option they have a 3 year warranty and are backed up from Cannock you can also try before you buy.

Dude, just look for a used transformer AC/DC unit from the mid to late 90's thats made in europ or the US. You will not regret.

Yeah i have a really high quality mask, it has loads of fuctions from speed reaction, how dark, and it can be set for time delay (good with pulse)

Problem is, with cages, i'm normaly always on my knees or on my back so i don't think the pedal would work for me tbh.

For cage work all you need is either an R-tec 200 or a Parweld 200, both are ac/dc, I use the Parweld and chevy2 on here uses the R-tec and we both do cages, a pedal is a useful thing to have and gives much more control.
With a pedal you don't have to use just your foot, you can put it between your knees and work it with you legs, I've seen gary chevy2 use all sorts of parts of his body including his head !!!

if you a min check this link out, its for parweld, they make tig torches etc, think they do flexiable ones as well, but its a good chance to see the different styles. you want the weldcraft type ones as consumable as easy available

I have the Parweld thumb wheel and it does have its uses but a pedal is better
