Tig Welder - what do i "actualy need"

are you going to weld aluminium? DC tig does stainless, mild steel, etc, its only really aluminium that needs AC

I tend to do alot of work on race cars, and can involve making intercooler pipe work and rad pipes out of alloy, specialy like today i had to send out a compressor housing off a project GTR i'm doing to have a flange welded onto it, which if i could have done in house would have saved me a days wait...

I don't mind paying somoene to do the work, but it would be nice to do it in house, i'm not the best alloy welder but i can do it and i can make it strong, as i've done intercoolers tank ends ect (nothing load bearing tho)

A start would be to go to college and do a TIG course. Im being dumb here brain isnt engaged in gear but what is T45

The Fusion DC Inverters are as good as you will get for the money.

Nah... i just get them to sign a disclaimer that they get in the car at there own risk and if they decide its a good idea to take a truck out head on.... its not my problem.....

But i've had a few crashes with my cages and they've held together really really well, its all in just designing them properly, i've got a HND in engineering lol, so i can blag it

Procage if your budget will go that far, it may be worth you getting an AC/DC unit, i think you will get your money back on it. for me it wasnt worth the extra expense of AC, not that often i get asked to weld aluminium, so would have taken ages to get the extra expense back.

I wonder if for FIA aproval you would need to be a coded welder, I dont know what welding qualifications you already have. I don't know what you need to do to get FIA approved, if i have to take couses i do not mind, i would infact enjoy it as i'm a total perfectionist... apart from my spelling as i'm dyslexi to Feck...

I intend do do some of the college welding courses in january when i get time, kind of stops me being a chancer lol. Not sure if 15 years of welding experience counts for much, but im sure there is a thing or two i will learn, and i get a nice certificate at the end of it to say i can stick two bits of metal together.

Right spoke to my mate and these are the options,

First of all two refurbed units,

Miller dialarc AC/DC 250 £750
Cebora 250 AC/DC £750

Then new units,

Palweld XTI180P £650 (DC ONLY)
Palweld XTI200 £1000 AC/DC think its transformer baced tho

Telwin 241 DC invertor £1100 (looks like a good bit of kit!)

Right what do you make of that, and give me comments on all of them please

This looks like the same unit as the parweld, but in "race colors" .... forsome reason i like it reminds me of my dad's honda civic ...... lol

The Parweld units are Chinese & all Inverter based; if you are going down the Inverter route you won't find better value for money than the Fusion units, which are British made with a 2 year warranty (important on Inverters).
The best quality out of that lot is without doubt the Miller, but it is also the oldest machine so future spares may be a problem.
Spare parts back-up for Cebora machines is outstanding but just check how old the model is, as I had one in for repair last month & they have discontinued spares for it.

both models are 5-6years old.

I hear you on the fusion, but just checking out what i "could" get in ac/dc first before i go down the route of DC only.

I may have made a mistake on the Telwin unit, i can't' recall if he said the unit was an AC/DC unit, for £1100, so that would actualy be the 242 ad/dc, which looks like a really good unit ?

Unless the Miller is a Dialiarc HF, it will be scratch start. It also will have no footpedal support.

The Dialarc AC/DC units are basically an arc welder. Good machines though.
