Thunderbolt not tightening

Thunderbolts are great, very rarely had an issue with them.
Usually due to poor concrete, in which case it's the wrong fixing from the off.

Has the thread on the screw worn?
If you've got a spare new one, try that in there.

I'm not a fan either. Same goes for any concrete screws il take plugs or chem over them everytime

I've always found the countersunk torx head fixing screws reliable.

Very excited the first time I saw these. I thought, ooh that's going to be really handy and save a ton of time.

Sadly, they turned out to be a complete waste of time and money. I wouldn't use one to hang a picture frame, let alone try to secure anything solidly.

I've found with thunder bolts it really depends on the quality of concrete, on whether you can get them tight or not the only time u use them is for bolting down into concrete floors, anything else I use expanding anchor bolts.

Use them quite a bit and I've found that 1, you need to get the hole right (NOT the right hole @slim_boy_fat !) and 2, use proper thunderbolts. The cheap ones are ****. As @Fraserb I rattle them in and don't think I've had one pull out. Only issue I can ever remember having with them was the other week and I went to tight with impact and it augered up the concrete, which was soft to start with.

It's same with any of these fixings. With the frame anchors, softer material would have a slightly undersize hole drilled, say 6mm, whereas something like a hard brick would have the correct 6.5mm hole drilled. They're usually naff when used in something like breeze block, no matter what you do.

I love the things, compared to the days of using rawl bolts, thunder bolts are gods gift!! I use a lot of the csk concrete screws from screwfix, very easy and discrete fixing. A very neat trick when one fails to bite in less than perfect masonry is to wind it out again and stick the thin end of one or two zip ties in the hole and then wind the fixing back in. When a builder I do fab work for told me that trick I was a bit peeved as I never thought of it. Better than having to use your pencil

Thunderbolt never heard of such trickery and had to google them ,looks like the work of the devil to me

If I had a Thunderbolt failure I would probably use a hammer fixing, but I never had one fail.

Another fan here.
Out of interest,in the early days,’94/5,the Unifix rep gave me demos,which I tried in his presence,he told me they had invented them,yanked on it with the claw of a crowbar,and the bar was flexing.
Few years later I was in a tricky situation with a stanchion of a cattle shed,got over it and bolted it down with m12x160,4 of them,this was on a windy welsh hillside,that 15’ steel is still there.Btw I was pulling on a 18” 1/2” socket bar.
As said ,only time I’ve had them strip ,is on soft stone.Often wish they’d come with a finer thread to get better torque as the gap closes.

Oh and another thing,I once had a Thunderbolt,my mate had a Lightning,but his,being a twin carb,needed more maintenance .
