This could be foreign material ingress into the threads, but it could also be they’ve used incompatible materials between the nut and the spindle and due to a lack of lubricant it’s allowed galling between the two.

If it was I, I'd be badgering the manufacturer or seller something rotten, on principle alone. If you've looked after it, & that's happened, I know I personally would be well peeved, in that situation.

I am peeved. And I have looked after it...it's the most expensive thing I've ever bought apart from my house!

There are issues with the machine that have yet to be rectified under warranty from a year ago....all from a company with "first class service"

Is it possible that the nut was crushed slightly out of round part way up? A thin spanner for example? It wouldn't take much to make it pick up on a dry thread, and once nipping at that point it's away.

Either way @grim_d has done a great job of removing the nut without causing more damage, if the conduit die can get that thread back into shape it should be ok in service. Knowing what caused the problem helps and with luck it wont happen again.

Getting an answer, or at least a likely possibility for the cause will also help with that irritating 'itch' from not knowing why. Most on this forum will be the type who need to know, nature of the beast for those interested in the sort of stuff covered on the forum I guess.

But in reality you may know potential causes but will never know exactly which it was.

A dry thread always has potential to gaul, especially stainless. Im a fan of lubricated threads.

No, absolutely right. It's more a case of having one, or some, likely causes to satisfy curiosity as opposed to the 'sh1t happens, buy a new one' approach. For me anyway.

Not likely, the hex on the nut is on the unthreaded section...I'm also not that brutal with it.

I'm sure a die will sort it but I'll be getting a replacement and keeping this as a spare now, it's not worth the downtime to risk it.

Well formed threads in non-stainless (or other likely to gall combinations) in what should be a grade other than cheese shouldn't gall (I'm not saying it never happens) through normal service though, particularly in an application where it is intended to be removed and refitted regularly, dry or otherwise.

This is why I feel it's a defect in manufacture, wether that be by design or material defect.

Convenient how the warranty doesn't cover the threaded end of the spindle, regardless of the type of damage.

The threads here were (at one point) dry lubed with PTFE spray, a wet lube would just turn Into a slurry with the fine MDF dust and contaminate my collets etc.

I would take a very sharp, very strong, hard pick and see if I could pry out the excess. Might just be aluminium stuck in the thread.

<edit> PS having done this a few times, you have to push really hard, the thread needs to be made immovable and you have to mind your fingers!

After much back and forth I have finally managed to get them to agree to replace the spindle under warranty.

I was prepared to pay 50% of the cost if they extended my warranty....nope ....speaks volumes if you ask me.

It's definitely not aluminium, you can see where it's started tearing the root of the thread from the parent material. Have a die arriving tomorrow to clean it up. :thumbup:
