Flat roof above the garage/extension has given up the ghost, Bl**dy water everywhere. (not on the car thankfully)
Builder starts tomorrow, so for a week or so the garage is out of bounds I'm afraid. I had great plans for this weekend as well.

Checked the wire, looks a bit jaded to say the least.
I think I will invest in a new reel.
Also, checked my gas levels, pretty low too, will get a refill this weekend.

Well, garage roof finally finished, so I set about what I thought was a minor repair so as to get back into things,
It will be interesting for me to see how rusty I may be.
As previous repairs, it turned out to be slightly worse than initially thought. (no surprise there then.)
As I have done a similar repair to the left hand side, I felt it would be a good place to begin with with.
As you can see, once the paint stripper had done it's work, it was clear to see the extent of the corrosion.
I managed to clean up and cut out the offending metal, tomorrow I hope to fabricate the repair and tack into place.

Looks like this car is not the only thing that is a bit rusty,
after a time away from the MIG, I have realised just how much technique you acquire over a period of time, and just how easy it is to forget even the basics.
I must admit, I have struggled somewhat and can only hope that with a little bit of practise, I can get back to where I left off.

Just read this whole thread and am very impressed with your project and the minimal tooling you used to form your metal

I think Redwine uses the thick metal "split pin" type thing, puts the sheet steel in there, with the line of the bend marked in line with the flat face of split pin, then used clamps to hold the "split pin" around the sheet steel like a vice and using the waterpump pliers to form the first 90degree bend, using the hammers to tap it flat and tight, then flip the metal round to the next mark in the split pin clamped tight and the the next bend is formed, then flipping the piece around again, and with hammer taps to get the doubled up lip, then metal flipped again and clamped again to form the final bend.

I would be very interested in obtaining one of those "split pin" things.

Any ideas where I could get one from.

Agree with you there lawnmowerboy,
This is one of the areas I struggled with initially. I think a little more practice is needed.
As for the spilt-pin Gandalf, I think I picked it up of E-Bay, I will check later and let you know.

I've been cutting my teeth on a disco recently. The only fabrication I've been doing has involved clamping steel to the edge of my welding table, and smacking the hell out of it with a lump hammer to make 90 degree bends I've found it a joy to work on in comparison to all these curvy cars - can't imagine how much work it's been for you redwine!

Well, decided to set about grinding back the weld ready for filler etc'
May need a little more fettling yet but I needed to know if there had been any areas that had not fully welded.
Noticed a little bit of distortion though, may need some work from underneath to bring it back up.
By the way Gandalf, no joy with the spit pin I'm afraid but I will keep looking.

Managed to get the filler on and smoothed out tonight,
hopefully it will be nigh on invisible once I have painted and added the rubber strip and plastic inner panel.
At the moment it is just a matter of fixing all of the final aesthetic areas of corrosion and protecting from the elements, long term I aim to get a full re spray, just need to know that everywhere is sound first.
By the way Tombardier, are you running a post on your Discovery, It would be of interest to see your progress.
Gandalf, sorry to say but I have had no luck with the split pin I'm afraid.

Thought I would take advantage of the fine weather and prime my latest repair so as to protect the areas of exposed metal.
Got a tad carried away, but as it is only temporary it will do for now.
It's amazing how different things look with a coat of paint.

Has there been any more progress on this? Im about to re-start repairs on my corrado and i remember seeing this thread a year or so ago so i though id revist for another dose of inspiration! Just looking through it makes me want to get cracking with mine again. Any more welding? Paint?

Hope to make a start on re building/repairing the tailgate very soon. It has a foam spoiler on it that is prone to absorb water once it becomes detached. I have had a quick look, and on the face of it appears pretty bad. can't wait to get back to mig welding. Sorry that I have not been around folks. Health issues along with other problems have meant that I have not been able into the garage of late.
I will try and get some pictures posted at the weekend.
So.... Watch this space.

By the way daniboy1_2_3 are you running a thread on the corrado, maybe we can motivate each other to get our projects back on track?

I've been putting off this particular repair as I feared it may be worse than I dare imagine, after all, that spoiler has been on there for 20 years and is made of foam of all things! (water trap I thought.) Still, with the help of a hot air gun and a steel rule as a pry bar, I carefully worked my way across the boot lid until the thing was free of the double sided tape. All it needed then was for me to pull the thing off the several poppers that were left holding it in place. After removing 2 screws and 2 retaining nuts that is.
You could say I was pleasantly surprised at what little corrosion there actually was, even after scraping away the flaky paint it was still far better than I first thought. (that makes a change!)
I just need to take some measurements of the sections I plan to remove, looks like just the centre section on the face of it, and then figure out how it comes apart. Looks like a folded seam, but I am not sure as yet. Best get the Dremmel out!!!
