Table saw, any good ?

Hi guys, i am after a small table/bench saw and as i prefer the old stuff i have found this one, but as i am not up on these i was hoping before i bid anymore has anybody much idea on these type.

I have googled but not a lot on info on these ones.

Looks half decent, the stand is homemade but I'm not that impressed with the lump of junk hanging off the bottom of it a bit of extra weight for stability ?

Why it's had the frog removed I don't know but it is there in the last picture so the first thing to do is bolt that back on unless you don't like all your fingers.

The top is only pressed steel, a cast top is soooo much nicer, it all depends what you want to do with it and how much you'll use it, the guide clamps at both the back and front so expect to spend a bit of time setting it parallel before each cut if you really want accuracy.

Like you I can't find much info on the web.

Oh yes, that thing hanging down, shows what i look at lol. didnt even notice it.

Is the `frog` that hooked guide thing ?

I would like a nice cast table but money is tight on this and i see tables go for well over £100 for a good one. Yes less a ton is all i want to pay.

Its only for a a few jobs on the boat but will come in for the next one

I'd say it was ok for jobbing about the house......ripping up wood on this is a site safer than a hand held circ/saw....
U won't be making anything that accurate but knocking up gates and fencing would be ok.....
Also the motors are not the best so don't expect it to run for years.....
I was given the same saw but a Ryobi, needed a new motor......the replacement was a tenner short of the cost of a new‘ one on special......
If u've got the room and money go cast iron and a small Wadkin is the dog's nuts........
As long as it v/cheap take a chance.....check out the price of a new'un and this saw wants to be about 1/3rd of the price.....much more , just walk away......save up and buy a new one......
Marita or deWallt make something similar but also rotates to make a chop saw.....used ones run around £200-300....
Ya get what ya pay for with modern gear......

I would like a little accuracy, i will be ripping along hardwoods, first job is a length of Iroko 450mm long x 115mm x 27mm then more 27mm thick Iroko to make a frame for a boat cabin step.

I looked at new ones at around £150 but wary of cheaper new things.

If you look at all the pics in the advert, the final one shows an instruction book - showing it was made by Sutton Tool & Die manufacturing of Ontario, Canada. I googled Sutton table saw and found a few hits from across the pond.

The purpose of the riving knife (how I've always known them) is to stop the kerf closing up and catching the blade, causing jumps, kickbacks and secondary cutting.

It's more important than the top guard imo.

Ah that bit, so the part i was talking about or Wookie as called it the Frog. I thought Wookie was talking about getting your fingers cut off by the blade.

That's funny I've never heard it called a riving knife, it's always been a frog where I've worked and I totally agree with pdg, it's far more important than the top guard.

It fits behind the blade to keep the saw cut open for safety reasons, I worked with a guy who lost several fingers using a saw without a frog fitted. If the saw cut closes up then the wood grips the blade and gets fired back the way it came.

If you're lucky it just makes a mess of the wood you were cutting, my mate had gone around to the other side of the saw to guide the wood as it came out of the saw when the wood grabbed the blade and pulled his hand into the blade. There was blood everywhere, several of the people who saw the result threw up and many left work for the day. The doc's tried to sew his fingers back on, a couple took, one didn't and he has severely limited use in that hand.

There are a few blind cuts where it needs to be removed but it always goes back on and caution is taken. One of the big saws I used to have access to you could wind up and down independent of the blade. Good idea less FAFF and more likely to wind it back up than crawling around bolting it on.

Unlike stuff like angle grinders etc. I'd happily use a table saw without a top guard - I find they do more harm than good. But without a riving knife? I'd be very wary or more likely not switch it on.

Here's the answer - I saw a programme where the inventor had so much faith in the product he stuck his finger into the running saw....and it worked!!

If you're planning to cut 27mm thick iroko with it you're going to need a fairly decent saw.

Avoid the scheppach table saws as sold by screwfix & other diy stores. They are also rebadged as other brands - I have a Parkside version as sold by Lidl. I was ripping a piece of 3" softwood on it & the magic smoke started pouring from the motor. I managed to catch some of the smoke & put it back into the motor and it runs again but it sounds terrible. It is now part of an ongoing warranty claim but I've lost faith in it and I'm on the lookout for a better saw.

The old Clarke table saws hold up surprisingly well.

Paid £30 for mine sh 4 years ago and it won't die. 2 hours ripping firings out of c16 last week and didn't complain once. Fence as always needs checking both ends to ensure its parallel. Its seen 50 mm iroko without bother. A good blade makes a big difference. Positive rake is important

I have been using an old Evolution Rage circular saw with a not to good a blade and has coped easy but for not cutting square, the bed is knackered. Cuts it easy though.

What size/type would you suggest ?

The one i first linked to sold, i didnt win it as my tops was £80, it went for £127.

I got it just now. Not sure on motor size but as it looks good, i dont mind getting a better motor if need be later on. see how it goes.

Yes a riving knife, i asked about that and he didnt answer that question. So i will fit one myself. On and make a nice table for it. i think i have a pair of castors here some where.

The seller is bloody hard work at giving out details etc. I asked for collection postcode before i bough it to make sure it is in Huddersfield and he asked if i can look for the details on Ebay. And i aksed he he can send more pics and details and he asked how will i pay for it, got a feeling this is going to be hard work lol.

Anyway i am going to collect this weekend

That looks like a good solid saw, nice find! Don't worry about the motor size, you can always fit a bigger one! That's the problem with a lot of the modern diy class table saws - the blade is mounted directly to the motor via a gearbox so if a motor goes you have to buy a motor/gearbox unit. A new one for my saw was £89, a new saw was £99!
