Table saw, any good ?

o made a stand and found the spindle size is 5/8, it has a washer fitted as a spacer for the 30mm bore disc at the minute. Bit out of true due to the 15.87 ( 5/8 ) spindle and the 17mm ID washer

A Makita disc as here is used

It looks like the bracket for the riving knife is broken off ?

Also i noticed this shaft spins when running, it is very pit of true and wondered what it is for ?

Now i had aquick blast to see what it was like at cutting a slab of Iroko 27mm thick, so no big deal as the Evo circular saw does it with ease.


This as far as it would cut either way until it started to struggle, i set the fence up within .05mm so it was square to the fence from the kerf at both end. I did two cuts so the reason the double cut. I was fettling the distance to see if it was out.

This the motor, not sure myself but 1/2HP seems low to me ?

So few things to fettle like the riving knife and why it will not cut much.

Check the tips of the blade to make sure they are not chipped, if someone has hit a nail it knackers the blade, if they are slightly chipped it's not expensive to get them reground/sharpened. It must be a fairly recent blade as it's an anti-kickback design.

Did you set the fence parallel to the blade?

Also, the riving knife should rise and fall with the blade - slightly below the top of the blade so you can make blind cuts.

I just thought that once the fence is locked in place it will be parallel with the blade.

Yes i understand the riving knife rises and falls with the blade, in the pic the the bracket that has the small screw hole in falls with the disc, so i am thinking the riving knife should attach to that.

I can make one up for it, just a faff about to do it.


I have looked for a better/ bigger motor and coe by this, bit far away,and out of cash for now anyway, but i see the size is correct for this kind of thing.

A 2ho 1500rpm motor is needed

Just had a quick checker over the tips, i counted around 8 tips that are flat, the rest seem ok.

I will get a proper spacer also for 5/8 to 30mm, found some already for a few quid.

Thats one thing i didnt ask when i bought it, being the motor size. maybe a should of, but still happy with it as its a good table. I could pinch a 3hp of one of my compressors maybe and try it.

Good job i got two compressors then for the blast pot, i knew they would come in handy lol, dont think i will need to sand blast for a while so no harm in using one hey.

will see about swapping it over tomoz no doubt it will not be straight forward lol

Have done, it is as you say 2800rpm, the blade is max 5600rpm...i think for got already lol.

Will it be better for the higher rpm aswell as HP?

what size pulleys are on the saw. a higher speed is desirable but not to fast as to burn the wood

Popped back and remove dthe cover and found that is has a this set up so good i guess,

no markings that i can see on the motor pulley. so matter of working it out myself and using the table thanks BS.

I could just put the belt on the largest motor pulley but prefer to more precise on this.

speeding it up will help the surface speed and cut nicer but wont give it any more power . measure across both pulleys they look to be the same size giving your spindle speed 1420 rpm. using the same pulleys on the larger motor would give 2800 rpm which is fine

I was thinking on adding the 3hp and using the largest pulley and see how it goes.

just popping to the off`y for a bottle, nee dit after today lol. then i mite pop back into the workshop and size it all up and do some math

No, not necessarily at all.

Where the cut stops looks to be getting close to the back of the blade - if the timber is contacting the body of the blade and jamming against the fence it'll really struggle.

If it is that happening, sort it out before you change the motor otherwise you might well end up with a second nose made of wood...

Get that thing aligned with a sharp blade and I'd bet that old half horse motor won't struggle unless you start forcing the cut.

I have just checked it is true and it still gets tight.

What is a a sharp blade for setting it up ?

Like others have said I'd be looking for at least 2hp preferable more, the thinner the blade you can get the less hp you can get away with but I think 1/2hp is never gonna cut it (sorry for the pun)

You could set the fence so that it is slightly further away from the blade at the rear and see if it cuts better, but it sounds like not enough hp and a dull blade.
