There's someone selling some enders3 printers locally, sub £100. Would one of these be a good buy to get the grandkids (and me) up to speed with this stuff?

All 3D printers will require a level of learning, we have 2 £7k industrial units at work and even they need attention and setting up correctly.
There is not such thing as "plug and play" its more like "plug and learn"

X1C was as good as it gets too be honest. Or maybe I was just lucky.
The thing about buying used, many people have ironed out problems buy the time they come to sell.

The time of print is the game changer I am thinking anyone starting on a Bambu or similar would think even those times were slow. Going from enders to Bambu was just game changing.
