As suggested by someone (sorry, can't remember who), a thread for stuff you've printed today, to avoid cluttering up the "Stuff you've made today" thread as, well, you didn't make it, did you?!

I'll start with a set of involute gears for my printer. I saw some "gear visualisers" for the motion of the extruder, but they annoyed me as they weren't gears: they were artist's impressions of gears. Involute or cycloidal is fine with me, but rectangles drawn on the outside of a circle irritate me. I made these a week ago, but the magnet for the extruder visualiser only showed up today so I could finally call it finished.

Involute gear (module 2 in case you care) visualisers for X, Z and E axis and a control knob.

Z-axis gears are in two clipped-together halves so you don't have to dismantle the printer to fit them.

Yeah, I keep meaning to take it off, but although it looks really obvious in the photos, I can't tell it's there from the angle I would normally look at the screen. Just for you though, I've taken it off now!

It definitely isn't anywhere near as irritating as fake gears though. There's a café in Long Eaton called "Copper Cogs" and with their logo of three intersecting (ish) and hence jammed fake gears I'm frankly amazed anyone goes in there and that it has managed to stay in business.

Yes, 16 hour print at standard resolution.

Dads underwater camera housing snapped its retaining clip.

So glued it back together to get some measurements and a quick cad later.
Got a basic test print.

It's definitely not the same as making something with your own hands (and the same could certainly be said of CNC work). However, that's not to say that there isn't any skill and creativity involved - at least if the part was self-designed rather than just downloaded and printed.

I can understand your aversion to plastic - it irritates me that the rules on recycling symbols on packaging in the UK are so lax: in my opinion it should be a requirement that any plastic packaging that isn't recyclable is coloured in purple with bright red stripes so it's really obvious that it's non-recyclable. I suspect that most manufacturers would quickly switch to recyclable materials if their marketing departments were told all their logos had to be on a purple & red striped background.

I dislike plastic as a material but still acknowledge that it's useful in some applications and I am a self-confessed tool-addict so having more tools (such as a 3D printer) is a bit of an obsession. It irritates me that so few 3D printing filament suppliers seem to offer filament refills (as opposed to filament on disposable plastic spools). Those that do seem to only offer refills in a few colours.

What seems to be the most common hobbyist filament (PLA) is (I believe) biodegradable and comes from corn starch or sugarcane starch rather than fermented dinosaur, so isn't all that bad. In all honesty though, I pretty much only use PETG (as it's better for tool-related things), which is less environmentally friendly. I can offer no good mitigation for my use of plastic aside from the fact I use a tiny amount of filament generally and we get through more non-recyclable packaging from stuff from the supermarket than anything that comes from 3D printing.

Which is a long way around saying - I think about this stuff a lot, but don't always do as much as I should!

Hello Dr. Yes I hear your argument.
I must admit for the likes of the camera housing clip above pictured where you are actually saving something from the ocean or the landfill it still commands some respect.
We live in a throw away society, If someone was to hand cast the lady phone holder or shape it from a brass block of billet it would have lesser appeal than a plastic printed version?
It cheapens hand made or hand crafted.
The brass one would still be around in a hundred years, the plastic one I can imagine it being sold in a pound shop
Within weeks, the ocean would be caressing her parted legs, washed up on some deserted island or in the belly of Moby dick.
Enough of my opinion anyway carry on guys.

I try to use mine for usefulness rather than random cack.

Would say that 95% of the stuff I have printed is self drawn. Because it's to my needs not a generic download.

The vivaro reversing camera mount and screen mount was probably one of my better ones for daily use. As went on the work van with a £12 kit and really helped.
Did change since the first one shown you make thicker spacer under the high level brake light.
