In a short break from making pepper mills, I'm making something that required drilling a (self-cut) pen blank. I've done this with normal jaws in the past (and that's worked okay), but Axminster do some rather expensive chuck jaws that dedicated to the job: https://www.axminstertools.com/axminster-woodturning-chucks-pen-jaws-103670

Jaws holding a blank for drilling aren't working very hard, so I thought a 3D-printed version would be ideal (and a heck of a lot cheaper!)

The "exit wound" from the drill was central enough for me:

The printer's currently printing a newer version with slightly shorter jaws (the outer end of the current ones is a bit too bendy to be doing any good) and with more gap between the jaws so they can close up on shorter stock:

Quality wise the first Anycubic printer's prints were nigh on as good as the Bambu X1C if it was dialled in properly, bed levelled etc. Of course there was that faff factor & it was miles slower.

I've got to wait until July for the delivery of my Elegoo Centuri Carbon. I ordered within the first 24 hours but that was too slow! Still, the P1S does a great job and the new one is for a specific task so happy to wait as it was only £300

I designed a box, slightly different to my usual style. I specifically wanted a cutout in the sides.
It's to hold a model that has interchangeable parts.

It will last longer if you put proper fillets at the tooth roots - the largest that will not clash with the mating gear. You can model the swept path of a tooth from that gear and fill in any gaps.

The root detail of most gears is dictated by the normally-subtractive machining process: you need space for the cutter to enter. With an additive item, that clearance is not required and can be used to increase the strength of the printed gear.

Unfortunately most 3D modelling s/w is still set up with traditional manufacturing in mind. You, the designer, are smarter than that s/w and can overcome its limitations by thinking. It is common sense - design the item for the manufacuring process used to produce it. The fundamental issue is that a good design is material- and process-specific. What works for a cut gear in metal is not the right solution for an extruded item in plastic.

There’s a root fillet of 1mm - the involute spur gear calculator I used said it had to be 1.5mm or less for that module of gear

So far so good (once I realised I had to mirror the file for the other side)
