Not today, but finished yesterday. A built in wardrobe and cupboard for my youngest daughter. She wanted it in the style of a Tardis, so I painted the doors Tardis blue and was going to paint the panelling and sign work on the doors later.

But then found a sticker that was almost the exact right size, the door width was spot on, just had to trim 10mm off the bottom of the stickers.

I used an old Yale key for the right door handle and placed the left door handle where the handle for the phone box should be. She's well chuffed

I just need to finish the ensuite you can see beyond it and build some more built in cupboards and drawers opposite the wardrobe then I can get back to more workshop stuff.

I've taken to using a scythe - it has the benefit of being quiet, and that you get to use a grindstone regularly while chewing a blade of grass, and when that's not enough you can hit it with a hammer! All metalworking in one convenient tool.

Nothing engineering related, but my grass got its first haircut of the season - it's been growing at a rate of knots lately and was looking really untidy.

Using a Flymo means that if it gets too 'scraggy' the mower flattens it and doesn't cut properly too long and it blows flat then springs up once you're past. Although it wasn't really dry enough, the forecast isn't encouraging for the foreseeable so it was a case of get on with it. I have combined fertiliser/moss/weedkiller ready to apply but won't doing that any time soon.

Cut mine twice this year already, same sort of reason, rotary doesn't like it when it's too long!

Possibly. The stone is from a local quarry that contains a lot of iron compounds, so the orange hints go quite well with the cladding. When the rusting has occurred (which is quite fast in Cornwall with its wet/dry cycles) it's pretty stable and doesn't really come off on a finger with rubbing. The clients won't mind some streaks if it does occur as it's part of the patina of the building. The wall's all fat lime with a little pozzolan added, and this same mortar is to be packed around the lip of the reveal. This has already been done on the first floor reveal and that doesn't appear to have been stained yet, despite being quite pale. I am test-fitting the final reveal now. The window frames are local Douglas Fir with a lip beneath that the reveal has to sit behind to catch drips, so some fettling has been required.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is it about this design that prevents rainwater and impact water from running down behind the outer top edge and inwards along the slope?

I think I understood that the entire outer metal window frame was embedded in a mortar bed, but still, according to everything I know, water would be directed behind it inwards ...

A good question; one that excercised my mind too! The stone wall is tied back across a 100mm cavity to a 200mm untreated local timber frame with 35mm Savolit board (mineralised wood fibre) on the outside. Savolit is pretty much impervious to moisture and frost. The rest of the house is clad in weathering steel, maintaining the cavity gap with Z channels which the panels screw onto. As the steel is warmed, it draws up the air through the cavity and vents it at the ridge, ensuring the timber wall's vapour gradient is inside to outside so it can never become damp despite having no plastic membranes.

The reveal top is angled slightly forward from level, so any water dripping from the outside or inside surfaces of the wall is directed outwards if it hits the top of the reveal. The mortar will be packed between the stone and the reveal edge (the reveal is proud by 1/2" or so), so the fillet above will tend to shed water. I considered a dam halfway back on the top surface of the reveal, but experience has shown it's not necessary. This detail only applies to this facade, which is north-facing onto a sheltered courtyard in a wooded valley, and with the prevailing wind being southwesterly it is uncommon to have any rain falling on this face.

We've sealed around the windows to the timber frame with oakum (flax fibres impregnated with Stockholm tar from pine trees), and the red colour you can see behind the reveal is the edge of the window frame that's been painted with red linseed paint. All this should be particularly water repellent even if some does get back there between the steel and wood. If it turns out to be problematic, the reveals are attached to the frames with coach screws so can be taken out without affecting any other part of the building, and they can be adjusted.

Ok, thank you very much for your efforts to explain ... you don't happen to have a finished sectional drawing of the concrete solution available????

... I always get bat ears at such solutions, because one of our buildings in Mecklenburg has thick exterior walls made of grass-iron stone (bog iron ore - or what do you call it?) which insulates absolutely fantastically with its many air pockets, but we get problems in damn near every place where we bring modern materials in touch with it ....

There's never been wind driven rain in this location as it's too sheltered and facing the wrong way. In the particularly heavy weather we had this winter, most of the wall remains dry from its position and the overhang of the roof. Fingers crossed it's immaterial even if it were more exposed, as the stone is acting as a rain screen rather than an absolutely weathertight layer. Any wet that were to get through into the cavity will be dried by the ventilation, and if it gets 30cm uphill along the reveal top to the wall, it's got 35mm of vapour-open board to get through before it reaches the wood-fibre insulation, and even then the lack of membranes means there's no interstitial condensation for it to join up with and have a party. My only concern if it tracked back so far is the possibility of water collecting between the steel and timber of the window frame, in which case a dam or cork seal will probably be in order.
