I have never really had much issue knurling, usually use the flood coolant running on it (more to stop the knurl seizing as they are old crap ones) and just plenty of pressure on the knurls.
Here is a stainless one I did a while back.

Drilling table for mill.
Made entirely from scrap. 5mm plate and 50mm x 5mm equal angle.
Just need some t nuts, studs and washers sorting.
I've left room all around so I can clamp to it using mole grips.
I don't have a drill press since I got the mill. I will still use my nippy vice directly on the mill table. But anything hand held or that I can clamp to this, it

should make things easier.
I did use arc welding for this. Good practice for my fillets. I struggled with distortion too, I had to beat it back into shape!

Lubricant makes a big difference. The knurl dislodges bits of material from the stock and if you don't lubricate, they get stuck in the indents of the knurled part and the next time it gets to the teeth of the knurl it gets mashed. Lubricant washes all the crud away.

I could do with a knurling tool. My lathe is not the stoutest, so I think the clamp type would be best for me.

Apparently low quality instant coffee is a little bit acidic & it helps to bring out the contrast

Try trimming off a few more thou of metal and knurling on very slow with a few drops of oil if the knurled pattern is out of sync ,
If you are worried about stress try using a long live tailstock centre , somewhere online is a chart of best diameter sizes for knurling.

I seem to recall engraving five or six workable diameters for knurling on a piece of roof line trim, but I'm ******** if I can find it as it's no longer hanging from a nail near the lathe, happen I should have used a two-screw fixing instead of a nail to hang it from.

Up to now the doors have cost nothing so I bit the bullet and got some 10mm twin wall polycarbonate which sandwiches nicely between the mesh and the retaining batons, the batons got ripped down out of a length of 8x2 that was lying around, just got to rip down some wider strips with a bit of a drip for the center bars

Yesterday I nearly made myself cry. The upstairs ring main was taking out the up front RCD. Killed the power and did some dead testing of the ring legs. Continuity, polarity & IR.

Cu is up at ceiling level and I'd wedged the Megger in the little wooden surround. It fell onto the quarry tiles of the porch. Still works but the rear half of the case is like a jigsaw.

Much super glue ensued.

After finishing a batch of welding, i was excited to try out my machine code... I set for 6 work co-ordinates for 6 parts to 1st op them all in one go... But for some reason my ancient mill won't process G55-G59 work coordinates, even though i can set them so had to do them individually.
