New bed arrived from our blue and yellow logo Scandinavian friends. Only one glitch, my fault, which I'll put down to poor lighting and eyesight - hence the Anglepoise brought in for reinforcement. Higher than old bed and the new mattress is amazing.

Couldn't face the drawers this evening, perhaps over the weekend. Back of car has seats down and is full of cardboard but it will get used by a colleague for modelling and prototypes at school.

I put sets of 45 kg tripple extending slides on the drawers of our divan beds ..for I got fed up of the supplied runners dying and the drawers getting stuck on the gie angle when they came off the old runnerstrips

I was down in a small wooded area last week cutting some Hazel down so our Men's shed can make some reindeer for the Xmas sale.

Today I made a contraption to see if I can get 15kg rolls to work on my mig.
The idea came from @gordon stephenson who has something similar on his mig. (I think)

I've an Rtech MTS250 and it takes 5kg rolls of wire.
It's a 250 amp mig and can burn a 5kg roll in short order.
Also I wanted to try dual shield mig and I have a few part rolls which are also 15kgs.
This is just proof of concept, because if the feed mechanism isn’t up to it, it's not worth pursuing.
Started with couple of bits of 40mm angle and flat bar.

Turned down a 10mm bolt and an old skateboard wheel to preform axle duties.

Then fitted to the top of the welder with neoprene packers.

An off cut of torch liner, some 5mm bar, more neoprene for back tension, a couple of vice grips and a few cable ties complete the "thing"

It seems to feed wire ok, I will see if it welds tomorrow before I waste any more time on it.

That's a mod I've been thinking about making on my own Rtech 180. I don't use it much but every time I need to buy wire I baulk at the price of 5kg roll, nearly the same as a 15kg! Plus the fact that locally its very hard to find decent brand wire in 5kg rolls!

Even Jerry Rigged up as it is, this mod works very well.
I think I need to get a proper wire spool holder, possibly something like this

I might try and get one from a quality scrap machine first. I know a few fabricators so someone is bound to have one.
The drag on the feed rollers is driven by the back tension so having something really free is probably pointless.
Without a bit of foam to stop it running away, the reel will spin for ages on my setup.
Also agree with about the 5kg rolls, when I ask in a proper welding supply shop for a 5kg roll of named wire they look at you as if you have two heads, but they will have pallets of 15kg rolls of ESAB or Bohler in stock.

Only 15kg wire I have at the moment is dual shield or stainless.
I have been playing with the dual shield and it is feeding fine but the results have not been good with lots of worm holes or / and porosity.
I have been able to run a reasonable bead but the parameters are so far out I must be doing something fundamentally wrong.
I know I am running the wrong gas (5% co2 instead of 25) but even so I thought it would sort of run.
When I go back to the solid wire everything works fine.
I will start a thread on dual shield to ask for advice when I get time.

Yesterday I finished off another roller system, setup on the boat is not ideal but it is similar to a previous boat of his that I did and that worked well so fingers crossed.

Also I made the big time Got sent a pic that someone put up on facebook.

Hopefully (fingers crossed...) the drawers won't see much use as they'll be used for spare bedding and different weight duvets.

But they are part of the strength of the divan.
So be careful of the weight or what goes on, on top.

When I didn't feel like drilling a hole in the end of my nice shiny new GYS Mig, I used the same tube on axle stand setup to sit the 15kg roll on, then wound wire from it onto an empty 5kg roll mounted in the lathe, running the lathe quite slowly, guiding the wire with a stick as I didn't want to see if mig wire would do a good impression of a cheese cutter on my fingers.

The really interesting bit is controlling two ends of wire on two rolls when you cut it . . .

I was given this floor tile from a bio boiler/wood burner the size of a large van! Turns out they are cast and quite brittle so break a lot and are about £120 each to replace! so I was given a order of 20 and see if I can beat the price

But seriously, yes that is the colour when welding aluminium. It is probably why I much prefer a blue/grey tint lens to a green tint one or better yet the clear of the Crystal.
