About a hundred and fifty profiteroles and a szarlotka for my girlfriend's birthday.




It was supposed to be a crockomboosh (sp? ) but I lost the morning taking her to A&E, she stabbed herself in the wrist with scissors excitedly opening presents! She's fine thankfully, missed everything major.

Bit of an odd day.
In a suit and tie in morning, few sherberts ina bar. With bar snacks.
Then back to potterin' the play pen. Had to work the beer through some how.
Some of the prep work was done when sleep was a distance memory.





Two Mitre clamps.

Both moved, but had damaged threads.



Google had found me a lot of information. Export models were painted, home markets ones were just waxed.



Yes I know the threads will strip the paint, but the description in the sales broacher made a point of all working parts painted with 5 coats of enamel.



Not silver leaf, but titanium. I couldn't buff it to get the colours to show.

Same time I got the 2 Hobbies clamp I got this geared Mitre clamp.




Both sets of clamps were left to soak in Citric acid.






Painted, waxed and waiting for use.

After I got the above geared mitre clamp I sourced another one, but failed to check the size.



A bit bigger.
But due to an accident I broke the frame, an easy repair with braze.
A nice filling job and jig making.




Baking dry after the Citric acid bath. Plus it makes the braze repair easier, as the frame is a casting.





Both geared clamps together.

This next small restoration was fun, because I wanted to try a cleaning method I saw on TV.



Rust had taken hold on the chrome finish. At this point I hadn't even tested it.





So, taking some tin foil and Meths, you polish the chrome and this haapens.




The chrome was polished that way. The body was cleaned with Bi-carb of soda and tin foil. Bit keeping the foil flat.



This shows the red flashing lamp working, plus the main lantern.
I may convert it to 4 x AA cells not one 6v Lantern battery.

As I was on a roll.

Turned a old casting box into a stand.



What I like about the look, is the fact it is battered, damaged and looks worn.
Well to get that look use it and abuse it.

All I did was this was hand sand it, then finish with a cabinet scraper. Then apply 6 coats of French polish.




What it looked like before the clean up.



Few weeks ago I finished this pump, so I made a back board.
But still can not find end caps. I can get new ones, but they don't look right. So I can wait until I can find old ones.



So I made end caps, why not.

I recently restored and converted a Storm lantern into a electric storm lantern.
Due to bad rust. But also the wick head had failed.

I knew I had one, but couldn't find it.
I did today, when looking for my box of BA nuts and bolts.



Hmm, not pretty, also not moving. Plus no wick.

So, place in pan of hot water, caustic soda and pumice powder.




After 20 minutes, remove and carefully rub with wire wool, then let simmer in water for 20 mins.



So add a wick.

I haven't got a lot of spare acetal sheet, so I'd rather not remake unless I have to.

Iirc, some kitchen chopping boards are made of it?

Then had the fun of hand filing the keyway in one of the steel ones. The plastic ones were easier (although I overshot on one and hence it now has two keyways!). The steel one with the smaller hole (one is a spare) I haven't decided how it'll be held to the shaft, so that one will be dealt with later. A couple of the teeth on the acetal gears look a bit rubbish, but I think they'll be fine and I can easily make more if needed. I haven't got a lot of spare acetal sheet, so I'd rather not remake unless I have to.

Might bump a bit but it shouldn't hurt. If they are running on those small pinions you haven't got a lot of teeth engaged it would be better if the pinions were bigger.

Only one way to find out...
